Medina Azahara Madinat al-Zahra es la fastuosa ciudad palatina que mandó edificar el Califa Abd al- Rahman III a los pies de Sierra Morena para proyectar una imagen poderosa del recién crea- do Califato Independiente de Córdoba. Más de 10.000 hombres trabajaron en su construc- ción, utilizando para ello los mejores mate- riales: mármoles, metales preciosos, azulejos, piedras policromadas... Estaba organizada en tres grandes terrazas escalonadas rodeadas por una muralla. En la parte superior estaba el Alcázar Real , donde se agrupaban las depen- dencias privadas del monarca y su familia; en la intermedia se encontraba la zona burocrá- tica y administrativa del palacio, con salones y jardines para audiencias y recepciones; la inferior estaba reservada para las viviendas del pueblo, así como para el zoco y la mezquita . Destaca del recinto por su belleza el famoso Salón Rico , que contaba con arcos de marfil y ébano, jaspe, oro y piedras preciosas y una fuente de mercurio que captaba los rayos de sol reflejándolos en mil tonalidades diferentes. En 1010, tras siete décadas de existencia, Me- dina Azahara fue destruida y saqueada por los bereberes, que redujeron a cenizas la mayor parte de esta fabulosa ciudad.

Madinat al-Zahra is the sumptuous pala- tine city that Caliph Ab’d al-Rahman III ordered to be built at the feet of the Sie- rra Morena in order to project a powerful image of the recently-created Indepen- dent Caliphate of Cordoba. Over 10,000 men worked on its construction, using the best materials: marbles, precious metals, tiles, polychrome stones, etc. The city was organised into three walled terraces . The upper part held the Alcázar Real , with the monarch and his family’s private quar- ters; the middle terrace held the palace’s bureaucratic and administrative sections , with rooms and gardens for holding au- diences and receptions while the lower terrace was given over to the population’s dwellings , the market and the mosque . The complex’s famous Salón Rico was fa- mous for its outstanding beauty with ivory and ebony archways, gold and precious stones and a bowl of mercury that caught the sun’s rays and reflected them in a thousand different colours. In 1010, af- ter seven decades of life, Medina Azahara was sacked and destroyed by the Berbers who razed most of this fabulous city to the ground.
