Shortly afterwards the Gran Teatro hosts the Competition for Carnival Groups with the different performers (comparsas, chirigotas, quartets, choirs...) presenting their repertoires. During the Carnival there are nu- merous activities: the gastronomic festival, and the well known Noche de la Cuenta Atrás being just two examples. After the judges have made their decision, the Carnival takes to the streets and squares of the city, culminating in the grand finale of the Carnival Parade, an explosion of light and colour which takes over the historic centre.

Winter. At Christmas time the spectacular de- corations light up the city and create a ma- gical atmosphere. Numerous activities take place running up to the seeing in of the New Year in the Plaza de Las Tendillas square, with a big fiesta and fireworks. In January the main streets and squares of the city are transported back to the past for the Medieval Market , with its stalls of traditional products and perfor- mances by musicians and actors.
