Yangzhou plant opening ceremony With what is claimed to be the largest manufacturing plant in China dedicated to the production of welded precision tubes, Marcegaglia China spreads over 714,000m 2 and is located in Yangzhou, Guangling Industrial Park, plus corporate offices in Shanghai. The company’s new production unit hosted a pre-opening ceremony in December 2010, and the official opening ceremony is scheduled for 19 April. “Just three years have passed since we first started thinking seriously about the project,” commented Antonio Marcegaglia, CEO of the group. “Today we are starting production inside a huge sized building, actually the largest building ever fabricated in a single step by Marcegaglia. We do have larger plants within the group, yet they have been built in subsequent phases through the years.” The Yanghzou area is currently in its first development phase, including 153,000m 2 of covered production area equippedwith Europeanmanufacturing systems, plus 4,200m 2 dedicated to office buildings. The complex will employ around 500 people. The total amount of the investment is estimated at €150mn, and it is part of Marcegaglia’s ongoing internationalisation plan. Production started in September 2010 with an estimated output, in the first step, of 300,000 tons/year of high-end steel products including heavy wall, high tolerance ERW tubes for precision mechanical applications; cold-drawn (DOM) tubes for applications in automotive, hydraulic and mechanical sectors; stainless steel tubes for sectors such as automotive, process and decoration; and refrigeration tubes and components (condensers) for the refrigeration industry.

It also includes installation and tie-in of the flexible risers required to

connect the flowline to the platforms. This contract will be executed by Technip’s operating centre in Oslo, Norway. The flowline will be welded at the group’s spoolbase in Orkanger, Norway. Risers installation is scheduled for the summer of 2011.
