IB – MUSIC Subject Summary:

The International Baccalaureate (IB) course in music runs in conjunction with the Senior Music programme. Students studying Senior Music have the opportunity to broaden their horizons through studies in the IB Music Course. The course has Honours tutorials weekly for an hour. Times for these Honours tutorials are timetabled with staff and student input (in 2018, Year 12 – Monday afternoon 5.00pm to 6.00pm, after Music Extension, Year 11 – Tuesday afternoon 5.15 pm to 6.15 pm after Concert Band and Senior String Orchestra rehearsals). The aims of the IB Music programme are to give students the opportunity to explore the diversity of music throughout the world; to encourage students to develop perceptual skills through a breadth of musical experiences, where they will learn to recognise, speculate, analyse, identify, discriminate and hypothesise in relation to music; enable students to develop creatively their knowledge, abilities and understanding through performance and composition; and, to assist students to develop their potential as musicians both personally and collaboratively, in whatever capacity, to the full. The course enables students to develop their performance skills through solo music making; develop their compositional skills through exploration and investigation of musical elements; use appropriate language and terminology to describe and reflect their critical understanding of music; develop perceptual skills in response to music and, gain knowledge and understanding of music in relation to time and place. Assessment Outline: Students in the course study major works for the two years duration. The works for the 2018 intake are: JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major , BWV 1047 and Kodaly’s Dances of Galanta . Assessment occurs through a Musical Investigation (20%), Listening Paper (30%), Solo Performance (25%) and Composition (25%) at the Higher Level. At the Standard Level, assessment is Musical Investigation (20%), Listening Paper (30%) and Solo/Group Performance or Composition (only one selected) (50%).
