OVER THE RIVER AND TO THE FEST The meandering Sugar River cuts through downtown Albany with authority. Sounds of running water punctuate life here, and lines to rent inner tubes snake down the street in summer. It's a peaceful scene that packs a punch, bringing life and fun to this small community not far south of Madison. Two years ago, the Albany Chamber, in partnership with local businesses, launched Riverfest. Overcoming the insurmountable odds of the COVID-19 pandemic, Riverfest took off. David Gavin, Albany Chamber treasurer, said the overnight success was surprising and a big win for the Chamber. The fledgling organization has seen growth in recent years, largely due to more community involvement. When Gavin and his husband moved here in 2006, they knew no one and had never even heard of Albany. But the town's charm stole their hearts. It's that charm that gives Albany an edge. Future growth is inevitable, and Gavin said the Chamber is ready to pave the way with events like Riverfest. Held the third weekend in August, Riverfest is a community event any tourist would love. From cornhole tournaments to volleyball and softball games, it's that typical small-town fest with a twist. The twist being canoe races, mud volleyball in the river, and even bed races. Not to mention the requisite live music and brats and hamburger stands. “It is definitely growing,” Gavin said, and added that the Chamber provides marketing and volunteer support as well. Plans are in place to expand the festival to include bigger name bands and more food options. The Chamber is also implementing new initiatives and actively recruiting members. Gavin designed the new website albanychamber.com

Partnerships are key. From the town government, to library, schools, and Green County Development Corporation, tapping into resources and presenting a united front can only bring growth. “Previously, there was nobody (from the Chamber) working in the other subcommittees around town,” Gavin said. “We've come together and done marketing for them.” The chamber promotes the local farmers market and hosted an Earth Day event with the library. “We want to work with the village board and encourage downtown businesses,” Gavin said. “We've networked with the community as a whole and we're hoping to get even more involvement. We have a good start, but we need more.”
