Green County 2023 Visitor Guide

NEW COPPER, NEW SLATE, SAME RINGTONE

Depending on when you're visiting this year, you may or may not be seeing scaffolding up around the Historic Green County Courthouse in downtown Monroe. It is anticipated that renovations will be completed sometime in 2023. What began as a simple re-roofing job turned complicated when structural damage was discovered in the building. The integrity of the structure was impacted by moisture (within the layers of brick in the walls), rot, and simply the passage of time. Engineers found evidence of isolated repairs done in the past, but this marks the first wholescale renovation in more than 130 years. Green County contracted with Renaissance Historic Exteriors for the project, involving engineers, masons, carpenters, roofers, coppersmiths, and crane operators. One of the most visible aspects of the renovation has been restoration of the clock tower. If you're lucky, you'll be here when the big crane puts the spire back in place. Soon after that, we'll again be hearing the bell mark the hours – just as it did when originally placed in the tower back in 1891.
