Dear Parents, Families and Friends

“Any story worth telling is worth telling twice” Rafiki, The Lion King 1 and 2

We think our version of The Lion King is a story worth telling at least three times! We have three great shows planned; beginning with a Matinee performance on Sunday 25 March and two evening performances on Tuesday 27 March and Wednesday 28 March. This year, over 100 students – cast and crew - from Year 4 to 6 have taken part in the musical showcase, The Lion King. It is an awesome experience and opportunity to be part of such a large production! It can be daunting to perform in front of others and we are very proud of the students who have taken the stage. I find it awe inspiring to know that the students and staff have pulled together a musical of this caliber in one term. It has been amazing to see the work behind the scenes, as people have rallied together to build sets and costumes; as well as to rehearse individually and as a team, choreographing dances, learning songs and bringing it together to be the fabulous show we are enjoying today! I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the students involved – backstage crew and performers – for the time you have dedicated to attending the numerous afternoon and weekend rehearsals. You can now see how your hard work and dedication has paid off! I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the staff who have coordinated various areas, putting in many additional hours over the past term. There are many people, both staff and parents, who have contributed to this year’s musical, throughout rehearsals, as well as during performance days. Without their willingness to assist, we would not be able to put on a successful production. To these people, I say a very big thank you! It is now time for us all to sit back, relax and enjoy The Lion King presented by Somerset College Junior School 2018. “Hakuna Matata.” Timon, The Lion King

F rom the D irector and P roducer AFRICA…. A truly magical place with burning skies and fields of gold as far as the eye can see, echoed by the sounds of fascinating creatures nearby. Growing up in the beauty of it all makes me want to share my memories with the audience of our production, bringing to life the images of my childhood onto stage is a dream come true. The cast and crew have been absolutely amazing and as passionate as I am in bringing the epic adventures of Simba to life whilst telling the tale of heartache, growth and accomplishment; the importance of family no matter what shape or size; overcoming all odds to restore balance to the circle of life. Hakuna Matata, no worries has been the motto for our journey and along the way we have grown as individuals as well as a theatrical family. During the show you will be transported by a colourful cast who have been choreographed so beautifully by a dedicated team of choreographers whose dancing skills are phenomenal .Foot stomping African beats vibrating through your veins as well as the colourful pronunciations have been perfected by our music director and sung by the cast , I challenge you to sing along! We have walked in the giant footprints of ellies, peeked above the tallest tree as giraffes and scuttled across stage shuffling our porcupine quills. Let’s not forget the ever important darker side of the African savannah, the scavengers at the ready to steal an opportunity at every corner, we experience these creatures through our hyenas, buzzards and Scar thus completing the Circle of Life. Let the sun rise on our stage and the beat of Africa awaken your soul! Brigitte Weintrop Director and Producer

N ants ’ ingonya ma bakithi baba ! H ere comes the lion , my people , the F ather of my nation ! This year’s Junior School musical The Lion King Jr. offers children an exciting opportunity to explore the rich cultural traditions of South Africa, communicating Simba’s struggles, perseverance and ultimate triumph. Through The Lion King Jr., children are invited to step into various animal roles as they tell the story of Simba through song, with the added challenge of creating an authentic sound through English, Xhosa, Zulu, Swahili and Setswana languages. With these languages came pronunciations to learn, and interpretations of their meaning and context. This musical allowed our students to grow as musicians, with learning opportunities in part singing, polyrhythms, chants and opportunities for soloists to really stand out from the crowd. We worked hard on creating the percussive heart beat that is so integral to the Lion King’s original score. Students rehearsed each week and used the music to help them tell the story not only through dance and drama, but through their diction and projection. Through learning the songs at home, we were able to use our time efficiently to polish and practise the pieces to the performance standard you are about to see. Once the lyrics were learnt, we worked out how each of the characters would sing, sometimes thinking a little outside of the box. We look forward to bringing our characters to life through the show, not only by our costumes, staging and makeup but by our voices! This talented cast can not only act and dance with enthusiasm, but sing with diction and clarity, blend within a chorus, use expression, breathe appropriately and musically, use accurate lyrics with pitch and rhythm and at the same time sing with a beautiful tone…and did I mention in a different language? A lot to think about when you are under a spotlight in front of a full house! It is always a joy for me to watch our Junior students step up into new characters and raise the bar with their vocal, performance and comedic abilities. Thank you to the cast, crew, production team and entire company for making my job so much fun, and for your many hours of preparation for this amazing show. Choosing the leads was difficult, yet pleasing to see the high standard of singing in the Junior School. The students in the chorus and lead roles have shown continuous and infectious enthusiasm, energy and in tune singing throughout the rehearsal process – many showing great independence in learning their songs before rehearsals had even begun, and leadership in rehearsals. I am very proud to have worked with you all, and I hope that you have enjoyed yourself throughout the rehearsal process as much as I have.

F rom the P erforming A rts C aptains Hi, we are Secret and Daniel and we are the Performing Arts Captains for 2018. We absolutely love the experience of the different musicals, but this one is a certain exception. We would like to thank all the teachers, staff, parents and cast, you have all done an amazing job! We believe that having musical at a young age really inspires young children to sing, dance and have fun! In a show, it doesn't matter how big the role is, but your performance is determined by the effort and care you put in. Even if you don’t nail something strait away, if you practice and concentrate then eventually you will achieve your goals, and that isn't just for performing arts. We are so excited to watch and perform this year and hope that everyone enjoys the show! Hakuna Matata!!!
