They competed in the Arabian Horse Association Distance Nationals in back to back twenty-five-mile rides. They did so well that Whitney turned down a very flattering offer for her beloved Miles. The October Set Back Little did they know, October was not going to be a good month for them. They started at Hillsdale with a great ride, good vet scores and then, after a successful completion…an injury was discovered. The head ride veterinarian suspected that Miles had a bowed tendon which could be a career ending injury. After hauling him to Wilhite and Frees Equine Hospital, it ended up being inflammation in the left check ligament and he had a hot splint too. The journey continues for “Miles and Miles” in our next issue

has gotten much better about eating, even when he is nervous or distracted. It used to be a nightmare to try to entice him to eat when away from home and now he eats far more reliably. Our new feeding program has completely changed Miles’ appearance and has made both of our lives simpler, less stressful and is giving me a healthier, happier horse”. Pressing toward our Goal They continue to work hard as they head into April for the Cowboy Country AERC ride at Lake Oolagah in Oklahoma. This event was yet another challenging ride for this young gelding. The conditions were terribly muddy and made the ride quite trying. At one point, Miles went up to his elbows and stifles in mud in a swampy area that had flooded the year before. Whitney and Terre were

so pleased with his attitude, sure-footedness, and stamina as he handled the adverse conditions in stride. Pressing toward their next goal, the team headed to a competitive trail ride at Milford Lake in May for their first multi- day competitive ride. There they rode twenty-five miles on the first day and fifteen miles on the second. A multi-day ride is the name of the event when there are two long distance rides in two days. Whitney and Miles finished the month at the 2016 Jo Tate Memorial ride near Cassville, MO. It was Memorial Day weekend so after the ride, they headed to Idle Nook Horse Camp in the Ouachita Mountains for a little rest and relaxation that also served as for conditioning for Miles. September proved that the hard work and dedication paid off.
