unrealistic by clinging lo the naive belief that peace is something we can put on or off like a coal. Peace is not simply the question of a h e a l t h y economy and favorable trade balances. Peace must not be thought of in terms of mere a g r e e a b I e , accepted and achieved national aspirations and boundaries. Nor is it simply the cessation of armed hostilities. Peace will not f o 11 o w automatically lhc disappearance of imperialism and colonialism. Peace is, first of all, a harmony established between God and man. Peace is the JOY of a good conscience. Peace is an ordered tranquility between nations. lf we wish peace, all of us must serve the cause of peace. As Pope Paul VI has reminded us, peace must be built up every day by works of peace. Some of these works are, aid to the poor, lo the needy, lo the weak, to the sick and the ignorant. And we must love the cause of peace. 'Whoever loves peace loves all mankind, without distinction of race or color. L i k e w i s e , we must acknowledge that peace must be based on moral and religious principles. Peace

It was a strange world that met the gaze of the Infant on the first Christmas night. Poverty and misery were rampant; slavery held in c h a i n s nearly half of mankind; the Creator o[ the universe was all but forgotten by those who owed existence lo Him. Today the pattern bears a striking resemblance to that of the first Christmas night. God made the world beautiful but the selfishness of man has covered it w1th ugliness. God made the world fruitful yet millions are starving for lack of the necessities of life. the same family of which He is the heavenly Father. But strife, selfishness, antagonism have caused them to fear, to hate, to discriminate and even lo kill each other. But to men of good will, the scene is not so dark. To those who are willing, God gives the power to become the ~ons of God, to feel the warmth of His love and the charity of Christ. Chnst is still man's Savior and His message of peace still offers the one and perfect an t i d o t e to the hate, selfishness and inhwnamty that poisons so much of the 11orld. 1leanwhile, let us not be G o d made mankind brothers, members of

Nativity Scene Attracts Crowds A nativit,· scene which has drawn large crowds of visitors since it was first presented in 1962. once more is att~a~~ing_area residents at the Verona Fathers Seminary at the Unl\·ers1ly of San Diego m Alcala Park. . The scene this year presents in 10 minutes the changing of darkness and light during the 24 hours of the birthday of Jesus. Viewers see the sunrise, the star of Bethlehem, the stable and the manger, Joseph. Mary and the Infant Je us. and the three Wise .\ten. Archbishop Sheen To Speak At Session Here A former New York clergy- man who became a widely known television personality and another recognized for his up-lo- date teacliing method ill be the keynote peakers at Religion Education Congresses here and at San Bernardino m January. The keynoters, discussing the confe.-ence theme, "Commu- nicating Hope. '' will be the Most Rev. Fulton J. Sheen, former Roman Catholic archbishop of Rochester, N.Y., remembered for his TV series, "Life ls Worth ~ving," and the Rev. Cyr Mill- er, creator of a teaching series using modern pedagogy to re- late the message of Christ. Buchmiller, 505 Tren- ton St., El Cajon. has been studying theology at the North I American College in Rome since 1966. He will return there early next month to complete his stud- ies. Deacon Buchmiller's brother, John, 11, an altar boy at Holy Trinity Church, will be among youth serving the Pontifical Mass, at which Bishop Maher will be principal concelebrant.
