THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location - just ten minutes from downtown San Diego and conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential and recreational areas, aswell as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate admission stands at 3,900 with graduate students bringing the overall campus enrollment to over6,000 students. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences as well as Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nurs– ing and Law. USD features high academic standards, small classes and excellent student-faculty relations.

Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on cam– pus. Students from 24 foreign countries also can be found in attendance at USD. In January of 1987, USD opened the doors to its new University Center, a 74,500 square foot building for students, faculty and staff. The two level Ernest and Jean Hahn Center is the largest building on campus. It is the eighth major project completed at USD in ten years. Recreation, intramural and athletic activities are expanding rapidly. Among the many recreation and intramural activities offered, some of the favorites include Mission Bay Aquatic Center activities (water skiing, surfing, sailing, crew), modern dance, aerobics, bowling, karate, back-packing, softball, ten– nis, floor hockey and volleyball. USD intercollegiate sports for men include baseball, basket– ball, crew, cross country, football , golf, soccer and tennis; women sports include basketball, crew, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

A NEW ERA IN USD SOFTBALL Dear Prospective Student-Athlete: I welcome this opportunity to introduce the USO Softball program to all prospective student-athletes. There are many tremendous opportunities available to players that choose to attend the University of San Diego to pursue an excellent education as well as compete and play at the Division I level. Torero Softball hosts a very competitive schedule on one of the premier softball facilities in the South– west. Our lighted complex allows late afternoon and evening home contests which fosters attendance and minimizes time out of class. Within the West Coast Conference (WCC), we compete as a member of the Western Intercollegiate Softball League (WISL), whose champion is determined in an annual end of the season tournament that alternates between Northern and Southern California. We here at USO are excited about the future as we begin a new era of Torero Softball. As no athletic aid is offered at this time, student-athletes are encour– aged to apply for financial aid awards. We are looking for a select group of athletes that are committed to hard work to achieve excellence both in the classroom and on the playing field .

SOFTBALL AT USD

USO Softball is a Division I, non-scholarship program that competes in the newly-created Western Intercollegiate Soft– ball League (WISL). USD's spring schedule consists of approximately 50 games against named opponents such as Stanford and Oregon State of the Pac-10, the Coast Guard Academy and intra-city rivals San Diego State, UC-San Diego and Pt. Loma Nazarene. In addition, players take part in several weeks of fall workouts, culminating in an open tournament against some of Southern California and Arizona's best fast-pitch teams. The USO campus boasts one of the finest softball com– plexes in "America's Finest City." The complex features a natural grass outfield and distinctive California "red clay" in– field. Light fixtures allow for night games. Please note: financial aid is available for qualifying incoming students.
