CHAPTER 5

An Emerald Realisation

My head spun in a tumultuous whirlwind of confusion and emotion. Eyes fixated upon me as I stumbled out into the street. The dry air hit me instantly and knocked me back.

After a while, the throbbing in my head subsided and my thoughts had cleared. I looked at the photo again. Something about the woman’s piercing, emerald green eyes and honey blonde hair provoked a faint memory. Scrawled on the back of the photo in smudged black ink are the words, ‘I’m sorry’. What happened to me? The faded memory keeps playing in my mind over and over again. With each passing second, my mind fumbles over the possibilities of who the woman could be. Placing my clammy hand inside the depths of my pockets, my fingers brushed upon a scrunched piece of paper. Wrapping my fingers around the paper, I slowly withdrew it from my pocket and began to unravel the unfamiliar object. Depicted, was a deep green hue, the most amazing print of colour I had seen. The emerald sweltered from the inside and sent bursts of light in textured streams around the exterior. It flamed and glistened in colourful oscillations, as though this elegant ball of light was alive. I gazed down at the photo of the mysterious woman, examining her soft features; the way her dimples deepened on her rosy cheeks when she smiled, and still, those captivating eyes staring back at me. I glanced back at the green grandeur of the star. A memory flooded my thoughts and I felt the smile on my face broaden. The recollection of a night, so beautiful, it amazed me. A night filled with astrological wonder and discovery and a woman who I think I love.

Emerald.
