Expert decorators say you should always include an element of black in every room as it will help anchor your eye. But what about a black feature wall? It’s a growing trend that is popping up in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and transitional spaces everywhere. A black wall, whether it be completely black or tinted with red, blue or purple can help any room look sophisticated, elegant and definitely unique. Pair with whites, creams and other neutral colours for a more sophisticated look or pair with yellows, blues, greens, etc. for something more fun and flirty. Ensure the room you’re painting has lots of light, whether artificial or natural, and lightly coloured furniture. This will help create a light dark balance and prevent the room from turning into a dungeon of sorts. Remember though, imperfections will be more noticeable on black walls, so keep extra paint handy for touch-ups. INTRODUCING BLACKWALLS

Ingredients • 1 cup (250 mL) frozen edamame • 1 cup (250 mL) frozen corn

• 1 pkg (250 g) PC Blue Menu Whole Grain Brown Rice with Lentils and Quinoa Blend • 1 shallot, minced • 3 tbsp (45 mL) fresh lemon juice • 1 tbsp (15 mL) omega oil • ¼ tsp. (1 mL) freshly ground black pepper • 1 cup (250 mL) cherry tomatoes, halved • 1/3 cup (75 mL) drained and crumbled light feta cheese in brine

HEARTY GRAIN & QUINOA SALAD Edamame, grains and cheese ensure this unusual and refreshing salad has a main course level of protein. Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Directions: Bring medium saucepan of water to a boil. Add edamame and corn. Reduce heat to medium; simmer 3 to 4 minutes. Drain; set aside to cool. Meanwhile, gently squeeze pouch all over to break the rice apart. Tear top corners of pouch about 1/2 inch (1 cm). Place pouch, upright, in the microwave and heat on HIGH for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Let stand in microwave 1 to 2 minutes. Caution: Pouch will be hot. Carefully remove from microwave holding sides. Pour into a bowl, stir and set aside to cool. In small bowl, whisk together shallot, lemon juice, oil and pepper until combined. Add edamame, corn, tomatoes and feta cheese to cooled rice mixture. Drizzle dressing over top; toss lightly to combine. Makes 4 servings. Recipe courtesy of: www.newscanada.com MORNING CALM

RAINYDAYIDEA April showers bring May flowers and that can mean a lot of rainy days spent inside. If your kids are bored with their toys, games and typical activities, here is a new idea to try: cook up a batch of cloud dough. In a large tub (with a lid so it can be stored for later) mix a ratio of 8 cups of flour with 1 cup of olive oil, vegetable oil or canola oil. Add some glitter for sparkle and colour or peppermint oil for scent and let the creativity begin. This dough will hold a shape, is easy for young ones to mold and will entertain for hours. Use typical sandbox toys, household items and kitchen gadgets for more entertainment. Most Canadian families are busy in the mornings: waking up, getting dressed, eating breakfast, heading off to work and/or school. There are a few tricks to employ that will make the dreaded and hectic morning routine more productive and enjoyable for everyone involved. First off, pick out clothes for everyone the night before. Check the weather forecast in the evening and then head to the closet to pick out the next day’s outfit. Being sleepy and stressed in the morning make choosing an outfit a bigger ordeal than it needs to be whereas planning ahead can save the headache in the morning. Second, pre-pack lunches, snacks, purses and back packs the night before to eliminate the last minute run around the house to gather up homework, keys, study notes, etc. Knowing what everyone will have for breakfast, how long it takes to prepare and consume will allow for schedule coordination. Mom and dad can eat breakfast while the kids shower and get dressed, and then swap roles when the kids’ breakfast is ready. A revolving schedule where family members are spread out throughout the house alleviates overcrowding in the kitchen and bathroom, which in turn reduces frustration. A little planning and preparation the night before can go a long way to making calm mornings.

PLANTING SEEDS FOR A SUCCESSFUL GARDEN It’s a little more difficult, but much more rewarding to start your summer garden from seeds as opposed to seedlings purchased from the local garden store. Don’t get frustrated if everything doesn’t sprout on your first try though as there are many natural reasons - like disease, poor weather, etc. - for your seeds not to survive. Insufficient watering, lack of sunlight and “bad” seeds can also affect the outcome of your seed garden. Start by purchasing seeds for plants that are known to grow in your climate. Also pick up some containers that are about 10cm deep which include lids to create a humid environment for your seeds to sprout. You can recycle containers from previous plantings; just soak them in a bleach solution first to sterilize them. Seed- starting soil is recommended as it has the right mixture of nutrients to help seeds start to grow. When you get all the required supplies, move them to a room with plenty of natural light. Then review the planting instructions on the packet and determine when the best time to start the seedlings is. Keep a notebook handy and write down important information like when you start the seeds, when they start to sprout, when they are fertilized (when about five leaves appear) and when the best time to plant them outside is. Before planting the sprouts outside, make sure the threat of frost is well past and there is adequate sunlight where you will plant. Get your seedlings accustom to the outdoors by taking them outside for periods of time to help cool them off and adjust to the natural elements. SPORT ANAGRAMS . THE SAFETY PIN The commonly used, yet often unappreciated, safety pin was invented by Walter Hunt a farmer/inventor from Lowville, New York. He invented it while absentmindedly twisting a piece of wire while thinking of a way to pay off a $15 debt. The invention, which he patented in 1849, made him $400. His intention for the safety pin was to simply keep fingers safe from injury. Other inventions credited to Mr. Hunt include the knife sharpener, streetcar bell and road sweeping machinery.

WEDDING TRENDS

The 2013 wedding season is starting to ramp up with many brides planning for summer weddings. A few trends wedding planners are seeing this year include: • Décor moving from trendy back to a sophisticated look with no shortage of glitz and glamour. Try crystal accents on tables, chair covers and lighting. • Linens and décor are turning to neutral palettes with small pops of colour in flowers, centerpieces and meals. • Many brides are opting for peonies in their bouquets and décor. However, since they only flower for two months out of the year, garden roses are a suitable back up. • Invitations are getting bolder with lots of colour as well as 3D designs, bold patterns and illustrations. • Signature drinks, dessert bars and ethnic dishes adorn menus. While cupcake wedding cakes seem to be gaining in popularity as well.
