Henry Edgar Hall FRS was one of the leading low temperature physicists of his generation in the United Kingdom. He contributed crucially to the experimental verification of the existence and importance of quantized vortex lines in superfluid 4 He and to an understanding of their dynamical behaviour. He designed and built the first working dilution refrigerator in the UK. In doing so, he made major contributions to our understanding of superfluidity in liquid 3 He.
