RESISTANCE WELDING

H. G. TAYLOR United Kingdom.

r . CONSTITUTION AND TERMS OF REFERENCE. Using apparatus which generally speaking is complex: and leaves little scope for the direct influence of the operator, resistance welding has but few points in common 'vith other welding processes while its field of application is also quite distinct from theirs . It was for this reason that, in r 948, the Governing Council of the International Institute of Welding decided t o create a special commission responsible fo r matters relating t o this p rocess and t o its equipment and use. Commission III was in fact constituted during the IIW meeting at Delft in l\fay, r 949 . Its t erms of reference include all matters relating t o electrical resist ance welding in all its fo rms : spot welding, p roj ection welding, seam vvelding, butt welding by pure resist ance or fl ash welding or both. It is concerned not only with the equipment used : welding machines, gun welders, both portable and fi xed , co ntrol gear, but also with the conditions of use of the latter, recommended settings and methods of welding in relation to the various materials and parts t o be welded. z . ORGANISATION. Initially, it had been decided that the U .S.A. delegate would be Chairman of Commission III but as he coul d not attend the first annual meetings, it was the Vice-Chairman, Mr. P. ]. VAN NOOIJEN (Netherlands) who replaced him. In r 950, the Commission appointed Mr. G. LANDRAGI N (France) to be responsible fo r its secret a riat.
