f) Definition of weldability. The first two drafts, which deal with symbols for covered electrodes and the determination of the corresponding mechanical characteristics, originate from proposals of Commission II (Arc Welding) of the IIW. Commission VII naturally encouraged the completion of work on these drafts, which have the advantage of clarifying and harmonising a certain number of important ideas : definition of types of coverings, definition of deep penetration electrodes, The next three drafts mentioned in the above list relate to filler rods. They were prepared on the basis of technical studies which necessitated the members of Commission I (Gas Welding and Allied Processes) of the IIW car– rying out many test s. Commission VII encouraged this \vork, for which there was a demand on the part of ISO/TC 44 SC/3, and the Commission was also con– cerned to ensure that the resulting drafts should b e prepared so as to be in line with the corresponding documents about covered electrodes. Specifications have all the time to be amended, completed or revised , to t ake account of the evolution of technical knowledge. For example, the code of symbols for electrodes at present requires various additions or amendments. ·when a problem of this kind is raised, Commission VII may play an important part b y indicating, where necessary, what investiga– tions sho11lcl he carriecl out. Such was the case for the application of the code of symbols for electrodes of diameter below r /8 in (r.35 mm) because of the diffi– culties encountered in determining the mechanical properties of the weld metal. As a result of decisions taken at the last plenary meeting of ISO/TC 44 in December 1957, a fair number of draft s, resulting in whole or in part from resolu– tions, proposals or working documents of the IIW, are to be circulated for com– ment. Such are, for example, the drafts concerning the subjects mentioned below : T esting methods for · determining whether an electrode is a deep penetration electrode. F iller metals for soitdo- brasage - Specifications for determining the characteristics of the deposited metal ·and conventional method of test for determining the strength of the bond on steel, cast iron and other metals. Specifications for determining the rat-ing of arc welding equipment. - Draft I SO proposals for rating of resistance welding eqitipment. - Conditions for the design of welded assemblies. ISO/TC 44 and its Sub-Committees a re also considering many other questions about which the IIW is putting forward proposals as the work of its technical commissions and the activities of Commission VII permit. Such is, for instance, the case with the terminology of welding processes, specifications for protective glasses, the symbolisation of low h ydrogen electrodes, the qualification of elec– trodes in relation to welding positions, the symbolisation of filler metals used for building up and certain measures concerning the non-destructive inspection of welds. Moreover, on the proposal of the IIVV and as a result of a recommendation put forward by Commission VII, ISO/TC 44 has set up Sub-Committee 8, dealing with gas welding equipment. scale of values for mechanical characteristics of electrodes, qualification of electrodes in relation to welding positions, conditions relating to the electric supply for electrodes, conditions in which mechanical properties should be determined.
