Moulsford Prep School

MOULSFORD Prep School is an independent day and boarding school for boys aged four to 13. Set in idyllic grounds of 30 acres, beside the Thames near Wallingford, it provides boys with a first-class education and an excellent start in life. Daily minibus routes covering north Berkshire and southern Oxfordshire, make it an accessible option for families living in the Newbury area. Moulsford Prep School has recently introduced a restruc- tured curriculum and a brand new activities programme, following a whole-scale review of the overall approach to prepar- ing pupils for senior schools. After extensive consultation with senior school heads, Mouls- ford’s new curriculum focuses on not only preparing boys for their next schools, but also ensuring they have the skills to equip them for life in a rapidly- changing world. So what does the new curricu- lum mean for Moulsford boys? They follow a curriculum that promotes intellectual agility, encourages them to think and analyse critically, makes connections across the subjects and gives plenty of opportunity for creativity and collaboration. The new curriculum encourages boys to have a go, take a well- thought-out risk, and, on occasion, fail. Exploration and enquiry are strongly encouraged and Moulsford life aims to develop boys’ resilience.

contribute positively to their community. The teaching programme is specifically designed to get the best out of boys, with plenty of practical and outdoor learning. High expectations are set in terms of manners and discipline, with clear boundaries provided. Competitive sport is a vital element of a boy’s development, at whatever age and level they are playing. At Moulsford, the single sex environment allows full

While exams remain an important part of school life, Moulsford boys continue to learn much more than how to score highly in summative tests, and regurgitate learned facts. The clear aim at Moulsford is to encourage all-round achievement and help boys to find their individual strengths and talents – not only in the classroom, but also on the sports field, in the performing and creative arts and more generally

advantage to be taken of the grounds and sports facilities, with teams and coaching to suit boys of all levels of ability. Although there are frequently sports fixtures on Saturdays, there are no lessons, allowing for more weekend family time and other activities. While the majority of boys come in daily, the boarding house offers flexi and weekly boarding, and the boarding ethos permeates throughout, touching all aspects of the school.

For those choosing a day school, Abingdon, Magdalen College Oxford, Pangbourne, Shiplake, Cokethorpe and The Oratory are the natural choices. One measure of Moulsford’s all- round success is the broad range of scholarships awarded each year at 13+. For 2017, there were 11 awarded by Radley, Magdalen College, Abingdon, Wellington, St Edward’s, Pangbourne, Shiplake and Cokethorpe, across a range of academic, drama, music and sports.

As well as offering an ‘away from home’ experience and promoting independence, this option also gives excellent preparation for those boys who may go on to senior boarding schools. Moulsford prepares boys for a wide mix of both boarding and day, co-educational and single sex senior schools. For those wishing to board, Moulsford boys go on to Radley, Wellington, Marlborough, Eton, Harrow, St Edward’s Oxford, Bradfield, Millfield, Stowe and Sherborne.
