1993 USD Softball Outlook----- ------------------ --------------- Heading into the 1993 season, the tasks faci ng Head Coach Larry Caudillo and the University of San Diego women's softball were simply defined - take the momentum provided by a veteran group of returning players as well as two consecutive seasons of over 30 wins and add to it a talented corps of newcomers in order to create a third straight successful season. It is a challenge they are willing to accept. Junior first baseman Aimee Reinard, the team 's "Most Valu– able Player" as a sophomore, heads an infield group that is equally adept offensively and defensively. The lefthander, who hit .372 with 37 rbi's in '92, will be joined by sophomore Kim Tibbetts at second base, senior Laura Cisneros (.340, 31 rbi' s) at shortstop and either senior Angie Straub (.526 in a limited role in '92),junior Amy Sepkowitz or freshman Debbie Smith at third base. Freshman Lisa Fricano offers the Toreros depth at first base. Sophomore Lisa Goodwin returns for her second season handling the Torero pitchers. She batted .366 with 26 runs batted in in 1992. Goodwin will share the catching duties with Smith and Cisneros but should see the majority of the action behind the plate. Caudillo expects the Toreros to be equaIJy potent offensively (where they batted .3 19 in '92) and defensively (a .952 fielding percentage with 11 double plays) in 1993. While facing a challeng– ing schedule that includes doubleheaders against Oregon State, Southern Utah, Northeastern Illinois, DePaul and San Diego State University, Caudillo feels his Toreros are well-situated to equalize and, quite possibly, surpass their 1992 achievements. They are ready to face their tasks.

The success of any softball team is based on its pitchers. The 1993 Toreros will be well-armed in its quest for success. The USO pitching staff will be headed by seniors Tiffany Wasilewski (who has won 40 games the past two seasons) and Hillary Savage (a 12 game winner in '92) They will be joined by sophomore Heather Kenney and freshman Andrea Marino, a Connecticut native who has been described by Caudillo as a "prime Division I pitching prospect".

The Toreros' outfield platoon is talented and deep. Topping the list of outfielders is senior Marianne Stahl, a First Team Academic All-American who hit .376 in '92. She will be joined by juniors Melissa Reinard (.339)and switch-hitting Cindy Harris (.281) and sophomores Brittany Volk (.27 I) and Julie Takeguchi as returning letterwinners. Freshmen Alison Rowan and Jami Shega will see plenty of action in the USO outfield.
