RENAMING OF U.S. 2 IN NORWAY ADVANCES
On behalf of the Kenneth Moraska family, Sheriff Scott Celello read a statement prepared by Moraska’s sister, Mari Moraska Negro at a recent Transportation Committee chaired by Senator Tom Casperson (R) Delta County. The bill introduced by Representative Ed McBroom (R) of Vulcan, Michigan on March 4, 2016 was approved unanimously. From there it travelled to the Senate Transportation Committee held September 8, 2016 where it was also approved unanimously. The bill was referred to the committee of the whole on September 20, 2016 and will go before the entire Senate for consideration sometime in October of 2016. Sheriff Celello read the following statement at the committee meeting held in Lansing on behalf of the Moraska Family: “I respectfully request that HB 5205 be passed. Ken Moraska a patrol officer for the City of Norway was slain in the line of duty on May 23, 1971. I was 13 years old at the time. His death, bravery, and sacrifice has left an indelible mark on my heart and soul. That pain has been a constant reminder of his sacrifice. It is my hope that by renaming a section of Highway U.S. 2 running through

the City of Norway will help to ensure that his name, sacrifice and service will never be forgotten. More importantly, that this honor will also help to serve as a reminder to all his law enforcement brothers and sisters that the magnitude of their service, commitment and readiness to put themselves in harms way to protect each and every one of us is understood and acknowledged. This memorial will serve as reminder to young officers starting out today that they, too, are heroes. Ken’s entire family is appreciative of your support in making this dream a reality. Thank you. Mari Negro” Celello said that it was an honor to be able to read the statement on behalf of the Moraska family and that he anticipates that it will be passed without further issue. An opportunity for family and interested parties will be available sometime in October to travel to Lansing to witness the final enactment of the bill to law. Negro plans on attending as well as the Norway City Manager, Ray Anderson. Once the bill becomes law, Negro hopes to have a dedication celebration. Plans for that have not yet been determined. The family expresses its deep appreciation to Representative Ed McBroom, Senator Tom Casperson, City of Norway, Chief Schaffer, Sheriff Celello and all those involved with this project. Celello is currently seeking the office of State Representative for the 108th District. Representative Ed McBroom’s term expires at the end of this year.
