The Babesta Beat plays on!

W e ’ re so excited to announce our new store at Brookfield Place. It’s been an incredible journey over the past months, with architects, construction crews, staffing up and planning floor sets. With neighbors like Hermes, Scoop, CosBar and Burberry, we knew we had to get it just right! This will be the first integrated store, featuring all of the cool clothes and toys alongside the modern furniture and best-of-breed gear. We hope you come and visit! But that’s not the only new Babesta in town: We’re over the moon for a fly little guy named Maxwell, born in November to our amazing buyer, Chandra. Needless to say, it’s been a busy couple months! This issue of Babesta Beat is rich with creative talent. Uber photog Anna Palma shot our fashion stories: The Amazing Life of an ’80s Superfan Born Decades Too Late, an over the top nod to our favorite decade, and Animal Jam, an adorable romp of fashion and fun where we also collaborated with Hong Kong-based artist collective Papinee. Top trends, tips and inspiration abound in this issue, including a fabulous profile of Babesta fashion fave Nununu. The brand’s alternative yet traditional take on baby and kids’ clothing is refreshing and cool and yes, we all rush to snap up their size 14 just in case. Invites will go out via email to our grand opening so if you want to be on our list and you’re not signed up for our newsletter, sign up on our site. And speaking of sites, keep an eye out for a redesigned Babesta.com. The new site is launching any day now! JENN, AZ & THE BABESTA TEAM SHOP THE CATALOG

Close Up: Chuck Close at the Parrish From May 10 through July 26, 2015, the Parrish Art Museum presents Chuck Close Photographs , a comprehensive presentation of the modern art superstar known for his large scale collage style photography (almost a modern approach to impressionism, in our opinion). Suffering from facial blindness, this New York based artist is not only an artistic pioneer but an inspiration for overcoming challenges and reaching the height of the contemporary art scene. The exhibition features over 125 of the artist’s images, from the early maquettes to large scale composite portraits. May 10–July 26. Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, NY. It’s Oh So Awesome: Bjork at the MoMA This spring, treat yourself to an interactive view into the life of alt rock singer-songwriter Bjork. You may remember her for her quirky fashion sense (swan dress anyone?), but her creative spirit spans well beyond fashion and even music. The exhibit features 20 years of the Icelandic native’s innovative projects and eight full-length albums. March 8–June 7, MoMA. Bed Head: World Pillow Fight Day Find your inner kid and grab a (soft) pillow. You have permission to let the feathers fly. April 4th is International Pillow Fight day, and adults from all over the city come together and regain their youth. Because the participants tend to be “big kids at heart” but not literally kids, keep your little ones at home. But definitely replicate the scene when you get home with a nice friendly match in the playroom. April 4, 2015, Multiple locations.

Sunny Day Sunday: Stop and Smell las Rosas The New York Botanical Garden celebrates noted Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in what is to be her first solo exhibition in NYC in over 25 years. For Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life, the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory will become Casa Azul, outfitted with Mexican terracotta pots, beautiful flowers and traditional folk art items. A dozen of her paintings will be shown in the nearby gallery. May 16–November 1. To Whit: Opening of the new Whitney Take the downtown train fromMadison to Gansevoort: That’s right, theWhitney Museum is headed south! OnMay 1st be a part of the highly anticipated outdoor- -indoor celebration of American art. It will be the biggest extravaganza the Whitney has ever done. Opens May 1, 2015. Outta Town: Museums at Night We found the perfect reason to keep your night owl flocking about town. Started in Berlin 15 years ago, the Night at the Museum festival has grown to include 30 countries and over 530 venues. Celebrated each May on the weekend closest to International Museums Day, this year’s event will feature everything from trapeze artists to poetry readings. Dash around the European museum scene and take in the culture. Unfortunately New York isn’t on the route just yet, though we know several museums have later nights on Friday & Saturday, perfect for an end-of-the-week extra dose of culture. Join in the adventure May 13th – 16th.

VAN GOGH ON THE GO C ultured City kids rejoice as Bugaboo launches yet another stroller inspired by one of the world’s finest artists. The Bugaboo Bee 3 + Van Gogh collection takes the Dutch artist’s signature style and soft color palette and applies it to Bugaboo’s ultimate city stroller. This art aficionado-approved ride is a top pick for museum hopping—from the Louvre to the V&A to the Met. The easy stroll, excellent suspension, one-piece fold and compact size makes it pond-hoppingly simple and city-right. The stroller features a canopy and footmuff in the Almond Blossom print with a silk/satin finish, after Van Gogh’s study of the flora famously painted for newborn nephew Vincent Willem, which now hangs in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. The detailed design of the art-inspired stroller befits the masterpiece. The coated green chassis and matching faux leather handlebar serve as a visual extension of tree branches and the petrol blue seat fabric and bassinet recall the painting’s clear blue sky background. If you already have a Bee 3 , don’t fret! Bugaboo offers a Van Gogh breezy canopy and footmuff separately. Talk about art from the start! babesta.com/bugaboo

Chatting with Iris Adler and Tali Milchberg of Nununu

Why the “black sheep” of fashion Nununu can be considered the industry’s new traditionalist

W e stopped and smelled the rose-scent with Nununu creators Iris Adler and Tali Milchberg (Nununu is always pre-washed in a signature concoction of baby powder scented detergent). Sitting down with the duo, we were able to dive deeper into the Tel Aviv-based label that has fast become an “it line” at Babesta, loved for its comfy feel, sophisticated silhouettes and anti-fashion fashion. It hits the right note of style and practicality and from season to season feels both timeless and trend-right. For the occasion, Milchberg donned a sleek black jumpsuit with cut-out gloves reminiscent of one of their collections’ pieces and Adler a shades-of-black ensemble. The two clearly share the same style that embodies their children’s brand. Nununu was formerly called Black Sheep, but re-launched with a fresh name a few years later, giving a nod to an ageless Yiddish saying that the pair heard from their grandmothers and mothers and now repeat to their children. Translating to a warm and matriarchal way to say, “no, no, no!” the chorus of dissent well befits the label that’s creators call more conceptual design than fickle fashion. “Every season you have to reinvent yourself—so tiring,” says Milchberg of the fashion industry. “Ours is not high risk, trendy stuff. It’s not right or wrong,” Adler adds. Launching the brand took inspiration and tenacity. The two spent a full year of discussions purely on the concept of Nununu before forming a unique design plan reflecting their shared perspective. Their vision was marked by simplicity, timelessness and gender neutrality, with an unwavering eye to comfort and quality without fussiness. Nununu speaks to the deeper viewpoint of letting kids be kids and free to immerse themselves in their surroundings. Season after season for the past 6 years, Nununu has remained consistent to the mission, a fact that makes the founders proud. Milchberg contends that creating clothing that becomes a long lasting favorite and is passed on from child to child is the ultimate measure of success. Whereas black heirloom baby clothes would hardly be considered traditional in a market mired with pastel pinks and blues, the purposeful use of the hue has become a signature that, to them, reflects a new generation of tradition. “In a world full of colors, it’s okay to be dressed darker and take in the experience that is around you…you can get colors from outside. We think kids’ fashion should be solid and calm,” Adler contends. Not to say that color doesn’t play a part: Adler and Milchberg fully embrace the simple pops of neons and primaries to enliven the neutral separates, and add dashes of color to their graphic prints of letters, shapes and words. Leaving gender stereotypes behind, most of the pieces are meant to be unisex, a truly modern and practical approach, allowing for flexibility when remixing an outfit.

20

babesta beat spring/summer 2015

Milchberg muses that when she designs she doesn’t look to the general fashion scene; rather Nununu is a reflection of a global lifestyle—a fusion of the food, music, cities and larger world they live in. Of course, as both founders are parents of young children, Milchberg and Adler assert they draw the ultimate inspiration from them. Along the journey the two learned some indelible lessons that today they laugh about. “Early on we used to pack the clothes in this beautiful black tissue paper,” says Adler—noting how proud they were with the presentation. Unfortunately, international shipping isn’t always the most kind, and the packages got wet somewhere along the route from Israel to Australia, staining all of the white garments within with black dye. “It was all sent back. Now we are very keen on polybags,” she laughs. In addition to the live-and-learn lessons, as the company grew, the two determined what skills they needed in the mix and built an excellent team. Currently in development is a new loft office where Nununu can take on new ventures. One such venture is Shadows, an initiative into the tween market that will augment the brand’s appeal to their growing (in age and size) fan base. Shadows rebrands the 8-14 year old demographic with fresh new photography and campaigns crafted to connect with the segment of shoppers (and the petite teens and adults who clamour for the size 14). Home is up next to get “Nununued” come Fall ’15. Adler points out, theirs is a brand that can connect with a host of industries and products. With cool nursery and youth room decor on the horizon and much more to come, all we can say here at Babesta is “Yes, Yes, Yes!”

TOYSTORY Dev Suj, founder of global artist consortium Papinee, brings to life his vision of luxury, learning & fun W e want to give a universe, a global journey,” says Dev Suj, founder and creative director of luxury toymaker Papinee, a company that could just as easily be described as a creative movement and social enterprise. Suj leads a consortium of artists to create children’s gifts for high street stores, execute large-scale works of art for display at who’s who events like Miami Beach’s Art Basel, the Cannes Film Festival and Shanghai Fashion Week, and plan events celebrating creativity with organizations dedicated to help underprivileged children. Growing up amidst creativity and culture inspired this venture, Suj says. He notes that quality and beauty marked his formative years, as did the special relationship he had with his parents. “They were always challenging my imagination,” he says. “We would close our eyes and daydream together. My mother would bring to life travels around the world, from Ginza in Tokyo to Prado in Madrid, without us having to leave our home.” He recalls the games—Gamin, Snakes and Ladders and other English toys—and the stories of Tutankhamun, King Henry, Christopher Columbus and Warhol, that his mom (whom he dubs Mary Poppins) would relay whisking him across centuries and continents with a turn of phrase. Those precious memories of colorful places inspired and fueled his path to create Papinee, a pledge to give that journey to others through heirloom quality toys built to at once inspire, delight and educate. Suj, who’s worked as a brand consultant for labels like Tod’s, Dunhill and Chopard, gathered 31 artists and 28 ambassadors to bring this concept to life. “It’s been a labor of love and so much fun for a group of individuals who love art and incredible quality, whilst wanting to make a difference,” Suj says. “We want to make toys you can keep your whole life—for dreamers of all ages.” The collection of artisanal plush toys and companion storybooks are steeped in history, art and culture: The sheep was inspired by Turkey and Ottoman architecture; the horse is reminiscent of the palace of Versailles and Louis XIV; the deer is clearly an homage to street art culture in New York City. The company also makes a priority of giving back, sharing art and culture through special projects with organizations from all around the world. “It’s the education of global ideas and incredible objet d’art , both child-safe and universally fun. We believe in that gift.”

FLIPPING OUT! HENLEY VAZQUEZ OF FEATHER + FLIP DISHES ABOUT THE LAUNCH OF THE FAMILY TRAVEL SITE AND HER FAVORITE VACATION SPOTS

A

photos courtesy of Malliouhana

fter working in the travel industry for over a decade, you would think Henley Vazquez would find planning a getaway with her family a snap, but even this former editor for Conde Nast Traveler and Indagare, a luxury travel site and agency, was challenged. Although luxury travel options have always been at the ready, high end travel tips and specifics for family trips have been decidedly less so. Noting this gap, she joined forces with Nikki Ridgway, formerly of Jetsetter, and launched Feather + Flip , “a site we hope will be the ultimate resource for the family traveler,” she describes. “A lot of families know where they want to go, but aren’t sure which hotel to pick and which room to book,” Vazquez says. Feather + Flip hits the mark for families ready to hit the road in style. The travel site features hotel reviews and notes the best options—be it one room that fits a family of four or inexpensive connecting rooms, and spotlights both the “bests” and the “buts,” providing a measured review that weighs all the important stuff. Not only insider tips on hotels, the site also dishes on in-the-know extras that can amp up your experience. “We include picks for date night as well as casual restaurants, favorite tour guides and attractions,” she says, adding: “Did you know there’s a company that organizes scavenger hunts for children in the Louvre? Or you can take your kids to Gladiator School before visiting the Colosseum?” With all of the school vacations and summer breaks coming up, we asked Vazquez her top spots for traveling with tots in tow. Here are a few, but there are lots more, and more coming daily, so check the site and chase the sun. featherandflip.com

“I’ve always loved Anguilla—easy to reach, cool beach bars, casual restaurants, seas so calm my daughter could safely play in the water even as a toddler—but the new Malliouhana that just reopened after a huge renovation is my favorite place to stay. They have big rooms with two queen beds and private patios, so you don’t have to pay for two rooms to fit your family, but you have space to sit outside with a glass of wine after the kids go to bed.” MALLIOUHANA, ANGUILLA

“I can’t tell you how many people ask us about traveling to Cuba with kids. It’s a fascinating place to explore, and now is definitely the time to do it, but it’s a much better fit for families with teenagers versus the toddler set. We just interviewed two moms who specialize in organizing Cuba trips so we could share their tips with readers.”

“I love Shelter Island, but Sunset Beach gets booked up well ahead of time, so finding a place to stay if you aren’t a summer renter can be tricky. This spring, the old Chequit will reopen with a new look thanks to the team behind the Salt House in Provincetown. It’s cute and quirky plus walking distance to the ferry, a beach, shops and restaurants. Shelter Island Heights is full of storybook Victorian homes and feels like something from another era. Bring on the hot dogs and apple pie!”

ST.REGIS SANCLEMENTE, ITALY

“Venice is pure magic for kids, but it’s also crowded and hot in the summer. The St. Regis is opening a resort on a neighboring island, so you can boat in to tour around San Marco then spend the afternoon hanging out by the pool. The best of both worlds!”

“It’s not new but it keeps getting better. I have a huge hotel crush on the new EDITION, which opened last December. It has huge grounds with plenty of space for kids, two gorgeous pools, direct beach access, massive rooms and even an underground nightclub so you can have an adult night out but still be an elevator ride away from the babysitter. For hipsters, check out the new Thompson. It’s not as family oriented but is still great and a lot less expensive.” EDITION,MIAMI

KEEP CALM & CARRY ON

Folding up so small it fits in the airplane’s overhead compartment, the Yoyo by BabyZen is the ultimate accoutrement for a jet setting baby. We love this ride for its easy handling, one hand steer and oh-so-small fold. At the airport, we suggest you roll baby through security but then fold and stow the stroller in the travel bag before you get to the gate. We expect the newborn-ready version to come out soon, so you better get your peewee’s passport pronto! babesta.com/babyzen

The CARES airplane safety harness by Kids Fly Safe is a must-bring on any plane for

families with toddlers. The harness gives a rambunctious preschooler (who could slip out of the airplane lap belt faster than Houdini) comfort, familiarity and security, keeping him safely in his seat throughout the flight. Compact enough to slip in a bag, and suitable for kids 1-4 years old, the harness promises easy travels ahead. babesta.com/kids-fly-safe

LIGHT & BRIGHT

However you travel: Zipcar, Uber or your own vehicle, if you’re getting outta dodge, you’re going to need a super light, safe and stylish car seat option and we’ve found one. The Nuna Pipa car seat is our go-to lightweight infant seat, because it’s easy to install and easy to snap onto the frame of your stroller, providing end to end service. And it’s simple to go from bright to night: The fabulous dream shade (dubbed the paparazzi shield) gives baby’s sensitive eyes relief from the sun, and allows him to get some ZZZs outside of the watchful eye of the TMZs. babesta.com/nuna

ONE & ONLY

Globe-trotting families do their best city sightseeing with their tots footloose and stroller-free. Swedish company Baby Björn has been making it possible for families to shed all the gear and just get out and see the world since 1961. We’re crazy about the Baby Björn One carrier as it’s so simple to get on and off thanks to an intuitive design. The versatile carrier allows parents to wear their babe on the front, side or back. Newborns nest facing in until 5 months and then can turn around to take in the museum scene. After 12 months, kids can be worn piggyback style, a head above the throngs of tourists. And if your tot spots a street vendor 20 paces ahead, go ahead, indulge in the gelato—the One is machine washable (though make sure your shirt is too!). Any way you wear it, the padded shoulders and ergonomic back support ensure your comfort for a long adventure shopping on Via Montenapoleone, trekking through Montmartre or strolling La Rambla. Ready to call it a day? Roll it up and store it on the bottom of your diaper bag, ready and waiting for your next adventure. babesta.com/baby-bjorn

Bugaboo’s on a roll with accessories this season. The stroller company releases the bassinet/seat stand, which works with your stroller seat and transforms it into an on the-go sleeping solution or high chair. Easy to fold and very compact, the stand allows you to travel smart STAND & DELIVER

OK CITY PEOPLE, LISTEN UP. We know the deal: you’re chronically vitamin D deprived, you have your nose in your device more often than not, order food with a click of a button and spend way too much time inside. It’s time to get out—no more excuses. Baby doesn’t want to hold you back— he wants to get out and see everything he can, probably for the very first time! Even though your little bundle cannot talk yet, we know he wants you happy and healthy. With the right assists, it’s easy: Here’s what you need to get out this season, get fit and take in that energy-boosting sun. But don’t forget your sunscreen!

Bugaboo Runner Jogging Stroller Extension , 21457, $400

C it y liv ing is abou t efficiency—our smaller spaces mean we don’t have the room for tons of strollers suitable for every eventuality. Many forgo the jogging stroller, simply for fear of stroller sprawl. Our friends at Bugaboo offer up a solution: No third stroller, this is just a foldable base that can tuck in a closet when not in use, and is compatible with your Cameleon 3, Bee +/3, Donkey and Buffalo seat, leveraging what you already have at home. The jogging extension, expected to be released in June, is very well thought out, hitting the must have checklist of any seasoned runner. The shock-absorbing air-filled fixed wheels have great suspension, offering excellent stability for an easy run. The handlebar is adjustable for your optimal running position, important to keep you in proper form. The stroller features a handlebar break so you can adjust your speed while running (particularly important in hilly areas). Unlike most joggers out there, your seat can be forward or rear facing like with your regular stroller so baby can face you or out to the world, as you wish. This jogging extension is one of the most ingenious things we’ve seen in a long time, and we cannot wait to get out there and run! babesta.com/bugaboo READY, SET, RUN! TREND Material Matters

More and more, we’re spotting natural materials and high tech techniques in nursery and youth furniture, as companies work to stand out. Many brands have headed up-market, adding new luxe choices to their product selection: Monte now offers a limited edition wool and walnut option for several of their most popular gliders and beds. Over the past few years, furniture maker Spot on Square has dabbled in new materials like acrylic, both clear (as in its Roh collection) and with natural elements in pops of color (like in its new Alto collection). Nurseryworks rechristened its brand this past year, dedicating the range to made-in-Los Angeles, price-is-no-object styles, like the Gradient, reminiscent of Calatrava’s bone like structure at the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in solid maple ($7500), and the uber luxurious Lydian Crib ($6900), with its black walnut frame floating in a 24K gold square base.

LOOKMA, NOSPRINGS!

Organic mattresses with a modern twist, Nook’s Pebble Pure is natural inside & out

No springs, a cobblestone surface and pops of color, Nook is a rebel in the mattress game. But not a rebel without a cause. Nook is dedicated to making sleeping safer (with the added benefit of style). The signature pebbles on the surface of the mattress are specially designed to augment airflow, which means better temperature regulation, and the company notes, a deeper and longer sleep. The organic mattresses are made with natural fire retardants and anti-microbial materials instead of synthetics and harsh chemicals, so parents can rest easy. At their core, the springless mattresses are coconut coir and natural latex, maximizing breathability. Wool serves as a natural fire retardant and even helps prevent overheating by pulling excess heat away from infant skin to the inner layers of the mattress. All textiles are made of eucalyptus and certified organic cotton, free of pesticides, and all of the dyes are low impact. We daresay there has never been a more considered organic mattress, breaking the rules in a groundbreaking way.

Pebble Pure mattresses are available in crib $395 and twin $695. babesta.com/nook

Eat play Love Scout the City with London Scout I nstagram lights up when Scout the City’s London Scout dons her latest fashion find! Although the four year old style maven reportedly would choose her Elsa outfit if she had her way, when not in princess mode, Scout’s seen sporting “it” brands in the indie kids’ market, from Barcelona-based Bobo Choses to Mexican luxe label Little Miss Galia. Her mom, Sai De Silva, serves as her parental paparazzi, posting Scout snaps daily for a dose of city kid style. “It all started because my single New York friends were sick of me posting my child on Facebook every 10 minutes (I thought I’d never be that mom),” says Sai. She says Scout the City became her alt outlet for the pics—a digital diary of their favorite children’s brands worn with Scout’s unique and candid street style. Clearly people are loving it: at the time of writing (and after 9 short months), Scout’s amassed a following of 67,500! We are big fans of the duo, and were psyched to chat with them about their favorite spots in the Big Apple. We suggest you give these city hot spots whirl — and snap a pic while you’re at it!

EAT This is clearly a question that little London Scout relishes and her answers are nuanced: Best macaroni and cheese (a category of its own): Atrium in Dumbo—Mom notes that the place is always filled with other well behaved toddlers for Scout to socialize with. Lunch fix: Though dinner can be a little more formal, for lunch it’s all about sushi at Nobu. Scout adores the vegetable rolls and edamame. Yummiest Dinner: Both mother and daughter light up at the mention of Gran Electrica—a very cute Mexican restaurant in Brooklyn. Scout calls it the “bubble man restaurant” because they have sketches of dancing skeletons with round heads on the wall. Sweet spots : Scout doesn’t only have one, she’s got two. One Girl Cookies is always the favorite for cookies and hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows, while Dewey’s candy shop in Brooklyn is home to her favorite lollipops and Pez dispensers. PLay Indoor Energy Burn : Klub 4 Kidz in Williamsburg. It’s a huge padded indoor play area filled with balls, slides, zip lines and rock climbing. Culture Rich Imaginary Play : Brooklyn Children’s Museum. It’s been around for some time—in fact it opened in 1899! There are miniature markets boasting everything from Italian pizza and West African beauty products to Chinese lanterns and Caribbean masquerade costumes. Picturesque & Fun : Jane’s Carousel. The beautiful glass encased carousel sits on a raised platform in the East River, has breathtaking views of the city and is only $2 to pony up! Awesome Afternoon : Pier 6 Playground at Brooklyn Bridge Park. It’s heaven for children, especially during summer months. Scout’s favorite playspaces at Pier 6 are “The Water Lab”, with water jets, and a mini river; “Slide Mountain” with two jungle gyms, a few super fast slides and climbing structures; “Sandbox Village,” the biggest sandbox in Brooklyn; and “Swing Valley” with 10 new swing sets for all ages as well as Tarzan-styled ropes. LOve Scout is in her element living in the city, says Sai. “She loves her diverse group of friends, ballet class and riding the subway! City life encourages her to be confident, outspoken and open minded to trying new things.”
