DO Rueda
, Spain
WINERY OVERVIEW
Finca Montepedroso was founded in 2008 by La Familia Martínez Bujanda, a family-owned collection of wineries that
dates back to 1889. More than a century has passed since the family’s patriarch, Joaquín Martínez-Bujanda, started
making wine; now his great-grandchildren, Carlos and Pilar, are carrying on the tradition.
Traditionally Rioja producers, the Martínez-Bujanda family purchased the Finca Montepedroso vineyard to realize
their dream of making fresh, aromatic whites from the high-altitude Verdejo vineyards of Rueda. Planted in 2002,
Finca Montepedroso is a 62-acre single-estate vineyard at an altitude of 2,500 feet. The family vinifies their Verdejo
in a small yet modern winery on the estate, continuing their tradition of producing family-owned estate wines.
LOCATION OF VINEYARD
The family chose to make Verdejo in the DO of Rueda rather than in another region such as La Mancha due to
Rueda’s particular terroir. Despite its Continental climate, Rueda’s high-altitude vineyards and gravelly, nutrient-poor
soil create an ideal environment for preserving acidity and producing fresh and complex whites. Finca Montepedroso
is located about a mile north of the town of Rueda.
WINEMAKING PHILOSOPHY
La Familia Martínez Bujanda is committed to making wine from their own high-altitude old-vine vineyards in
Spain’s best wine regions. Through a commitment to sustainable farming and modern technology, they continue a
century-old tradition of producing top-quality, family-owned, estate wines.

Winery Overview
Victor Fernández established Viña Somoza in 2001. His philosophy is to fully express the unique characteristics of the
Godello grape by using the most advanced technical equipment, along with careful viticultural practices.
Location of Vineyard
The winery is situated in Galicia along the ancient Camino Real, where grape growing dates back to the Romans.
The winery is tucked into the Cordillera Cantabrica Mountains in DO Valdeorras, (which translates as “Valley of
Gold”). The soil is slate substratum irrigated by the River Sil providing fertile land for the vineyards. The climate is
Mediterranean Continental, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.
Winemaking Philosophy
Supervising Viña Somoza’s winemaking is well known oenologist, Fernando González. Precise grape selection,
quick, careful transport to the winery and immediate pressing are prioritized to avoid early fermentation. The wine
is fermented in French oak barrels to create a varietal wine bursting with floral notes, tropical fruit and the unique
character of the Godello grape.
