Permanent Maxillary and Mandibular Canines
265
SECTION II
(a)
Labial outline:
The labial outline of the root
is slightly convex from the cervical third to
the middle third and tapers to the apex.
(b)
Lingual outline:
The lingual outline is
straight from the cervical third to the mid-
dle third and there is a gradual taper to the
apical third.
DISTAL ASPECT (FIG. 14.8)
The distal aspect of the crown is bulkier than in the
incisors; the distal surface is slightly convex in the
incisal third and becomes slightly concave above the
contact area.
1.
Shape of the crown:
The distal aspect of the
crown is triangular or wedge shaped.
2.
Outlines of the crown:
The outlines of the
crown are similar to the mesial aspect except
that they are more convex than in the mesial
surface.
3.
Contact area:
The distal contact area is at the
centre of the middle third.
4.
Outlines of the root:
The outlines of the root
are similar to those of the mesial aspect. The
surface of the root from the distal aspect shows
a vertical, shallow depression extending from
the cervical line to the apex.
INCISAL ASPECT
1.
Shape of the crown:
The shape of the crown is
roughly ovoid in the incisal aspect.
2.
Outlines of the crown
(Fig. 14.9): The increased
labiolingual dimensions of the canine can be
seen from this aspect. The crown outline from
this aspect is asymmetrical, with mesial portion
of the crown having lesser mesiodistal dimen-
sions.
(a)
Labial outline:
The labial outline is convex
and makes the crown appear bulkier.
(b)
Lingual outline:
The mesial and distal mar-
ginal ridges converge towards the cingu-
lum. The lingual outline is smaller in di-
mensions than the labial aspect. Two fossae,
the mesiolingual fossa and the distolingual
fossa, are seen from this aspect.
