When it comes to luxury resorts in the Maldives,
it’s the nuances that make all the difference
between each surprisingly-unique island.
50 Shades of Turquoise:
How to Differentiate
One of the most common
questions I’m asked about the
Maldives is ‘what’s the difference
between resorts?’ because, to
many people, they blend into
one big, homogenous, turquoise
blur. While all of the country’s
120 resorts are surrounded by
shimmering waters, each one
has unique features to set them
apart; from one-of-a-kind facilities
right down to the distinctive
topography of the islands and
Take, for example, Vivanta by Taj Coral
Reef Maldives; at 250 metres long by 200
metres wide, the island resort is intimate in
size (although not the smallest by Maldives
standards). That’s one of the reasons why
the Maldives is so exclusive; every island
is too tiny to host competing businesses,
so each is its own tiny realm with private,
self-contained activities, dining and retail.
Vivanta has a hip vibe, and the décor offers
a contemporary twist on tropical island
chic. Driftwood and seagrass contrasts with
luxury toys such as Sony Sound Systems.
As a diver, I love that Vivanta is one of the
few resorts in the country with its very own
shipwreck embedded in the house reef.
The busy PADI Five Star Gold Palm dive
centre also boasts a coral regeneration
Another unique feature is the Jiva spa.
Unlike most Maldivian resorts, which focus
upon Balinese massage, this spa draws
upon the Indian heritage of Taj Hotels to
offer special therapies inspired by ancient
Indian wellness traditions.
