At one point, my youngest son — an accomplished amateur

photographer — and I chose the Hana highway for a photographic

tour, leaving the rest of the family at the beach. Equipped with our

beastly carbon-fibre tripods and digital SLR’s, we drove for six

languorous hours from Paia to the bamboo forest beyond Hana,

stopping anywhere we wanted. Sure, the rest of the family could

have joined us, but they made it clear they would’ve rather “eaten

porcupine quills,” and that was okay too. A few days later, my old-

est son and I rented motorcycles and wheeled around the

island, making 1200-plus turns and enjoying Huli-Huli chicken at

a beachside grill before heading back for a big family dinner of

Korean BBQ.

My daughter-in-law says getting away with family is about making

memories for both children and parents, whatever their generation.

I agree: the satisfaction of seeing my kids and grandkids

discovering this wonderful world on their own reminds me of the

divine freedom of being a kid on vacation — and my own early days

of travel. For some, trying to design a vacation to fulfill the deepest

travel desires of an entire multigenerational family may seem an

impossible feat, but for my family, it’s well worth the effort.
