At one point, my youngest son — an accomplished amateur
photographer — and I chose the Hana highway for a photographic
tour, leaving the rest of the family at the beach. Equipped with our
beastly carbon-fibre tripods and digital SLR’s, we drove for six
languorous hours from Paia to the bamboo forest beyond Hana,
stopping anywhere we wanted. Sure, the rest of the family could
have joined us, but they made it clear they would’ve rather “eaten
porcupine quills,” and that was okay too. A few days later, my old-
est son and I rented motorcycles and wheeled around the
island, making 1200-plus turns and enjoying Huli-Huli chicken at
a beachside grill before heading back for a big family dinner of
My daughter-in-law says getting away with family is about making
memories for both children and parents, whatever their generation.
I agree: the satisfaction of seeing my kids and grandkids
discovering this wonderful world on their own reminds me of the
divine freedom of being a kid on vacation — and my own early days
of travel. For some, trying to design a vacation to fulfill the deepest
travel desires of an entire multigenerational family may seem an
impossible feat, but for my family, it’s well worth the effort.
