Ultimate Family Vacations | FALL 2017

Last year, while on vacation in Jamaica, I was certain a

catamaran cruise to Dunn’s River Falls was one such happy

medium. Climbing the falls would provide the adrenaline rush

my oldest craved, while sailing over calm waters would keep

my youngest content. All went well until the return trip home,

when the seas turned rough and the catamaran was catching

air as it hit swell after swell. There we all were, huddled on

the floor, me trying desperately to comfort one hysterical

child, while travellers whooped and danced around us feeling

the obvious effects of free-flowing rum punch. “Great,” I

thought, “we can now safely cross ‘anything to do with boats’

off our travel list forever — and probably rum punch too.”

And for a time, I was right. Then this summer, Ava, the kid

who swore up and down she would never step on a boat

again pursued — and successfully obtained — her boating

license. Ava had faced a down huge fear in Jamaica, and

when she’d had enough time to process the event, she

decided that she would control her fear, not the other

way around.

And so it goes. Over the years, we’ve visited several

destinations throughout the Caribbean, seeing and

experiencing beauty and contentment beyond compare.

But for me — as a traveller, a woman, and a mother — the

very best part has been our adventures, big and small. From

my oldest trying scuba diving for the first time in Jamaica,

to my youngest jumping into the ocean without holding

my hand in Turks and Caicos, travel has allowed us all to

expand our horizons — quite literally. It’s been about breaking

down language barriers in Mexico with a good laugh, giving

octopus a try (and a pass!) in the Dominican Republic, and

being brave on a catamaran in the Caribbean Sea. More than

anything, it's been about three strong women, learning to

face their fears, and having travel adventures to cherish for

a lifetime.
