Giggles burst like bubbles

fromour snorkels. Our underwater

game of “I-spy” had turned into a contest. Who could make

the best pufferfish impression? Grandma! Laughing and

bobbing in the bay. Surrounded by sunshine and red rock,

my kids, my mom. The best of memories made.

A story we’d laugh

about for years…

MUCH LIKE WINTER,

TEENAGE ANGST

IS COMING.

After a lifetime of family travel,

one mom braces herself for teen rejection.

By Heather Greenwood Davis

I’m sitting on a ship in the middle of the Panama Canal when

it occurs to me: I’m on the cusp of becoming that parent.

You know the type: Super lame, knows nothing, unhip and

completely eye-roll worthy.

It’s a weird time to be thinking this. I mean, after another day

of incredible adventures on an UnCruise across Panama

with Vijitha Bahadur, one of my closest friends, I’ve probably

never been more cool and less parent-y; laughing long into

the evening with the incredible people we meet, agreeing to

early morning skiff rides out into ocean waters, never looking

at the time before saying yes to the delicious concoctions

offered by the bartender.

Without our kids on board, it has very much been a “when in

Panama” getaway.

That’s not to say we haven’t missed them.

At very specific moments over the course of the eight-night

cruise either she or I will stop — mid-paddle on the kayak,

a quick whisper as guest expert Jackie Hedgpeth shares

some tantalizing fact about marine life, two bites into a sinful

chocolate dessert — and mention which of our kids would’ve

loved that moment most.

But sitting here now, passing through 77 kilometres of

one of the world’s most incredible man-made marvels,

understanding for the first time the sacrifice and ingenuity

necessary to allow ships to cross this isthmus, and thinking

(again) of how much my kids would benefit from this kind of

experience, it hits home: I am a parent of teens.
