fractured wells produced 3.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d)
of marketed gas, making up less than 7 per cent of the national
total. By 2015, the number of these wells had grown to an
estimated 300,000 and output had grown to more than 53
Bcf/d, for about 67 per cent of the total natural gas output of
the United States.
Fracking for natural gas production is not limited to shales
or other source-rock formations, nor to horizontal wells.
While most natural gas from hydraulically fractured wells has
come from onshore tight rock formations, fracking has been
successfully used in directional and vertical wells and in non-
tight formations and reservoirs.

Better known for car service and repair than
for ar tistic endeavour, a company leaves its
comfor t zone to honour the Queen
“During the Second World War, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth
II served as a mechanic in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial
Service, a branch of the British Army. At her own insistence,
Elizabeth learned how to change a wheel, deconstruct and
rebuild engines, and drive ambulances.”
Proceeding on this firm ground, the automotive services chain
Kwik Fit decided it would make a unique contribution to the
Queen’s 90
th
birthday celebrations in May. Working under the
direction of the West Country artist David Parfitt, a crew of four
technicians with the Letchworth, Hertfordshire, UK-based firm
devoted 280 hours to the creation of a remarkable “portrait”
of the monarch, assembled from over 800 individual car
components.
The 11.5-foot, 255-lb piece – now on a year’s tour of the
company’s centres across the United Kingdom – can be
viewed on
www.kwik-fit.com/queenofparts.The site also
supplies particulars of the components represented: engine,
wheels, interior, seating, lights, electrics and trim.
The work utilises some 164 feet of cables and hoses, 125
