2013 UC Merced Research Enterprise Book - page 35

UC Merced is the newest campus of the
University of California system and the
first U.S. research university built in the
21st century. A primary goal is to advance
innovation developed by campus re-
searchers for local economic stimulus and
overall societal benefit.
As the campus grows, both the number
and quality of new inventions are expected
to increase commensurately. While the
previous two fiscal years can be viewed as
“down years” from a numbers standpoint,
the variety of new inventions has been
impressive and has spanned the gamut
of research disciplines, from solar power,
stem cells, robotics and nanotechnology
to wireless communications and automat-
ed-control systems.
Of the 112 inventions disclosed by UC
Merced scientists and engineers since
our campus’s founding, 36 are currently
available for licensing. Twenty-two of
those have been patented or are subject to
pending patent applications.
UC Merced has one design patent for a
waste-recycle invention. The U.S. Patent
Office has also issued five utility patents:
z
one in chemistry
z
two in solar power
z
three in engineering (one in lasers, two
in optics)
In addition, two more patents are soon to
be issued.
Three campus inventions are licensed to
commercial partners, and another is
exclusively optioned to a local company in
the solar-power field. This year, the
campus entered into two exclusive licenses
with California-based start-up companies,
one focusing on a novel medical therapeu-
tic and the other on physical therapy.
Of six additional inventions subject to
ongoing discussions four are in licensing
talks and two are being considered for
exclusive options.
Other metrics serving as indicators of
research activity, such as the number of
confidentiality agreements with industry
and material transfer agreements, have
increased markedly in the past few years,
indicating an increasing awareness of
UC Merced research.
