th
September,
25
young designers
battled it out on the
catwalk at the 2012
FAD Junior Awards final,
hosted by Vauxhall Fashion Scout
at the Freemasons Hall in Covent
Garden.
Through fashion projects, the
George Sponsored FAD Futures
Programme aims to provide 13 to
25-
year-olds from disadvantaged
backgrounds with the necessary
skills and confidence to succeed in
the future.From the 120 participants
who underwent weeks of
Fashion Futures’ workshops,
25
finalists were selected by
an industry panel to take part
in an intensive FAD summer
school. It was there, with the
support of industry mentors,
that the emerging designers put
together their catwalk-worthy
collections in just five days.
Inspired by a victorious year
for Britain, designs followed a
Great British’ theme. With a
wide array of different styles, cuts
and patterns, the competition was
close.
However, it was 17-year-old
Serife Nyazi who impressed the
jury and won the FAD 2012 Junior
Award of a two week design
placement at George ASDA.
Nyazi’s womenswear design, which
combined a leather trim box shirt
with zigzag striped trousers in blue
and white, was praised by George
womenswear designer Kausar
Mitha.
The Award for Creative Pattern
Cutting, presented by Marks &
Spencer designer Richard Bruce,
went to 17-year-oldToyosi Salvador.
Salvador’s brave block red military
jacket with 3D oversized pockets
and embroidered detailing dazzled
the jury.
The Award for Commercial
Design, announced by Boohoo.
com stylist Jennifer Gladman was
awarded to Denea Joseph, 17, from
Newham College in east London.
Joseph’s punk inspired splatter print
leather and suede dress featured
safety pin detailing and a popular
peplum waist.
Special mentions were given to
Robyn Yeang, 19, for her fashion
illustrations and Ezoe Robinson,
18,
for her remarkable sketchbook
work.
To date FAD has helped more
than 5,000 young people discover
their design talent. Now in its eighth
year, the creative charity’s Futures
Programme continues to provide
life changing opportunities to those
from less privileged backgrounds.
