Great Expectations
Continuing the recent Hollywood trend for reworking iconic films for a modern
audience
One Day’s
David Nicholls shows that, while innovation can be inspirational you
simply cannot beat a great classic. Helena Bonham Carter is excellently eccentric as the
jilted yet ever waiting Miss Havisham, while Jeremy Irvine (
War Horse
)
is the optimistic
Pip in pursuit of Holliday Grainger’s Estella.With a big name cast, this latest remake is
somewhat different to the Gwyneth Paltrow/Ethan Hawke 1998 version. Before this new
cast was confirmed, Rooney Mara (
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
)
was a potential Estella,
with Meryl Streep apparently unable to take
the role of Miss Havisham due to conflicting
schedules.
However, the Harry Potter actress Helena
Bonham Carter would seem like the perfect
choice to play the ever waiting bride to be; in
a film that will no doubt have both Dickens
enthusiasts and cinema goers with great
expectations of their own. The combination
of Nicholls together with a cast that can only
be described as featuring the best of British,
the classic novel is brought right up to date in
this latest adaptation;‘Great British’ indeed.

Red Dawn
Following in the footsteps of the late Patrick
Swayze is no easy task but
Thor’s
Chris
Hemsworth takes on the role of the hero in
this remake of the 1984 original. Sadly this
time around there’s no Charlie Sheen among
the cast, but Josh Hutcherson (
The Hunger
Games
)
and Isabel Lucas (
Transformers: Revenge
of the Fallen
)
prove more than a match for a
North Korean military invasion.
Alongside them is Tom Cruise’s adopted son
Connor, proving that it’s not only his dad who
can save the world (ok, small town America)
when they’re outnumbered and outgunned.
With an estimated budget of £75 million, this
time round the ColdWar enemy of the Soviet
Union is replaced by North Korea; director
Dan Bradley looks set to demonstrate just
why it is never a good idea to invade America.
With action sequences, guns, missing family
members and the reminder that
it is not always the size of the
fight but the amount of fight in
the person that counts,
Red Dawn
is one remake that was definitely
worth waiting for.
