a) Distribution of Fabricators in the UK
Fabrication firms tend to be located along the
coasts, often in regions with a strong heritage
in heavy engineering industries, such as
ship-building, mining or power generation.
Over the past 40 years, the bigger fabrication
yards have also encouraged the emergence of
a diverse, often local, supply chain in which
SMEs have evolved to support fabricators
by delivering more specialised goods and
services, such as pipework fabrication, painting
and insulation, asset integrity consultancy and
other technical services.
b) Fabrication Work for Field Developments
on the UKCS, 2008 to 2013
Oil & Gas UK recently conducted a survey
covering the five year period 2008 to
mid-2013 to assess the volume and location
of fabrication activity taking place in the UK
associated with UKCS developments and to
identify where fabrication for these projects is
undertaken by firms overseas.
DECC approved more than 60 field
developments from 2008 to mid-2013 which
