The culture generally rewards conformity,
sodifferences are often hidden and
untreated. YusakoNetsu, a Japanese
SPwho had livedmany years in the
US educatedme about professional
development in Japan and assuredme
that no Japanese audiencemember
would ever walk out of a presentation.
“The Japanese people are far toopolite
for
that
!” she said. Askingquestions
during a presentation is also avoided
for fear itmay be rude to the
sensei
or
expert. I learnt too fromElizaKumamoto,
the chief translator and a psychologist,
the intricacies involved in translating
concepts that are integral to the
LP, like ‘contingencies’, ‘praise’ and
‘structure’. Eliza also taughtme the
delicate dance that occurs between
speaker and translator, and even
demonstrated that this presenter’s
jokes can elicit laughter, evenwhen
translated into Japanese.
Many hours andmany conversations
with supportive people helped
to equipmewith the requisite
knowledge tomeet the challenge
of presenting this first Japanese LP
workshop.
All too soon the thirdday of the
workshopdrew to a close. Through
a common desire to help children
who stutter, bridges hadbeen built
andbarriers scaled. Basedon the
reaction to theworkshop, a second
workshop is nowplanned for 2015.
