Welcome to the Summer edition of the Vacations magazine!

This issue has me reflecting on one of my all-time favourite trips: A once-in-a-lifetime journey across

East Africa. During this month-long adventure, I experienced the Serengeti, arriving in Tanzania near

the end of the great wildebeest migration; as soon as my tour group entered the park, we could see

that the plains were dotted with herds of these incredible animals. From Tanzania, I stopped in Kenya

visiting a popular elephant sanctuary which helps care for young, orphaned elephants. There was

a rhino at the sanctuary at the time, but I didn’t get to see him – he was on a time-out after being

“naughty” and trying to charge the fence that separated visitors from the animals. Next, I did my

ultimate bucket-list adventure: mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda. It was surreal to sit just metres

away from a massive silverback as he, and our small group, watched two younger gorillas play in a

tree above us.

Africa has a way of capturing travellers’ hearts, which is why, in this magazine, we have created a

special section focusing on Africa. In these pages, our writers will take you: across Namibia’s striking

sand dunes; to Kenya to spend the night in a luxury camp; and off-the-beaten path in Cameroon

where you can sip fresh tea and dine on a traditional cuisine under the shadow of an active volcano.

Other stories aim to introduce you to incredible travel experiences in other countries, including the

best place to see pandas in China, where to dive in the Philippines, and treks for biking and hiking

in Taiwan.

We hope this inspires you to consider destinations you hadn’t before. When you are ready to plan

your next adventure, our travel specialists are here to help.

Happy travels,

Karen Leiva
