Metalube appoints managing director
Robert Brown, chairman of Metalube
Ltd, became managing director as of
March 2014, taking over from company
founder David Lee, who will remain
with the business as a non-executive
director. Commenting on his new role,
Mr Brown said, “This is a very exciting
time for Metalube as we are developing
new product ranges and expanding
into further international markets. It is
a privilege to work with David and I’m
confident that our handover period will
be seamless.”
Mr Brown joined Metalube three years
ago with two other directors (both
from lubricants firm ITW Rocol) as part
of a management buy-in. He is the
majority shareholder of the business.
He was previously managing director of
Herbert Brown Ltd, a UK-based, family
owned retailer. During his time there
he acquired experience in corporate
finance and business management
best practice.
David Lee commented, “It is incredible
for me to witness how far Metalube
has come from when I started the
business 25 years ago. I am delighted
to be handing over the baton to such a
confident team and I know that in their
safe hands Metalube will continue to
grow to new heights.”

Ontario standards recognise use of PP pipe
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation
has included polypropylene pipe for
gravity flow sewer water applications in
the December publication of the Ontario
Provincial Standards (OPS). Adding
to the already approved use of high-
density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe in
diameters of 100 to 1,500mm, the newly
standards and specifications denote
dual and triple wall polypropylene (PP)
pipe.
“We are pleased that the Ontario Ministry
of Transportation’s Design and Contract
Standards Office has incorporated the
criteria for dual and triple wall corrugated
polypropylene gravity sewer pipe, 320
kPa, into the new edition of the Ontario
Provincial Standard Specification and
Ontario Provincial Standard Drawing,”
stated Ewout Leeuwenburg, senior vice
president of international operations for
Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc (ADS).
“This is an important advancement
for greater, open competition for
communities who want to maximise
their systems, as polypropylene pipe
has been proven to reduce costs and
extend service life.”
ADS offers its SaniTite family of
polypropylene sewer pipe products
in accordance with the new OPS
standards. The size range of 300 to
1,500mm sewer pipe is certified to CSA
B182.13.
The Ontario Provincial Standard
Specifications include OPSS 1843,
Material Specification for Non-Pressure
Polypropylene (PP) Plastic Pipe
Products; OPSS 410, Construction
Specification Pipe Sewer Installation
in Open Cut; OPSS 421, Construction
Specification for Pipe Culvert Installation
in Open Cut; and OPSD 806.030, Height
of Fill Table.
“What is also important to know is that
the pipe is designed in accordance
with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design
Specifications,” said Greg Bohn,
ADS director of national engineering.
“AASHTO LRFD is a strain-based
design procedure for buried structures
and is suitable for thermoplastic pipes
such as HDPE, PP and PVC. This code
considers the actual failure modes
of thermoplastic pipe such as thrust,
buckling and combined strain to ensure
a viable design.”
In Canada, ADS has pipe manufacturing
plants in Heidelberg, Ontario, and St
Germain-de-Grantham, Quebec, with
stocking distribution yards inMorrisburg,
Ontario; Moncton, New Brunswick; and
Red Deer, Alberta. The company has
a global network of 57 plants and 28
yards.
