From 2002 to 2007, the MSCI
World index doubled, mainly
driven by the growing prices
for oil, natural resources and
commodities. In 2008, most of
the gains of the past years were
lost as the MSCI World index
fell 42%. Some regions of the
world experienced more acute
variations; in China and India, the
MSCI Index grew by a factor of 6
and 7 respectively between 2002
and 2007, before being impacted
by the economic downturn. The
China and India MSCI Index fell by
52% and 65% respectively from
2007 to 2008.
