Moving north early in September 1845 over what is today’s McArthur River, the expeditioners were
constantly in want of food, shade and clothes. In marked contrast, the numerous local aboriginals
were healthy and comfortable in that coastal tropical environment. Leichhardt noted
“…they
were all well made, good looking men…and one young man, whose body was coloured red, was
even handsome…”
