Local CULTURE
With their local expertise and diverse range of products,
one-of-a-kind, independent businesses are an integral part of
what makes Portland a great place to live and visit.
In March 2014, Coffee By Design
(CBD) opened its fifth retail location on
Diamond Street in Portland’s up and
coming East Bayside neighborhood.
With artwork and warm colors on the
walls, a beautiful wooden bar and
wooden tables, the polished yet homey
coffee bar exudes as much comfort as
the specialty coffee served there. And
located behind the public space is a
bright new roastery where highly trained
and passionate staff care for coffee
beans that can be traced back to the
farmers who produced them.
In an increasingly homogenized
world, communities that preserve their
one-of-a-kind businesses tend to stand
out. Coffee By Design is emblematic of
the local small business culture that is
driving the Maine economy and helping
to place Portland at the top of so many
“best of” lists. Independent businesses
are owned by people who live in the
communities they serve and are
committed to investing in their future.
Dedication to community is a hallmark
of Portland’s small businesses whose
owners know that supporting the
environment and each other is key to
sustaining not only a healthy bottom line
but also creating a vibrant region for
residents and visitors alike.
CBD co-owners, Mary Allen Lindemann
and Alan Spear, are Portland business
owners who understand the importance
of small locally-owned businesses in
Maine; they believe that how they
conduct business makes a difference
both locally and worldwide. The success
of Coffee By Design is testimony that
excellent customer service and oversight
from hands-on ownership results in
happy customers and strong sales.
Lindemann helped launch the Buy
Local campaign to educate citizens
of the values provided by community-
based businesses and their significance
to the local economy, culture, and
social fabric.
Today over 450 local businesses in
Portland alone have joined the Buy
Local network; you can find their listings
in the Keep Portland Independent! guide
available throughout the city or on the
website
portlandbuylocal.org
. Not only
does your support of our local economy
help make Portland the exciting, intrigu-
ing city that it is, but you’ll find so many
unique and interesting places to explore
during your visit here. So sit back
and sip an excellent cup of coffee
while scoping out your next local stop
in Portland.
