The current specification aims to develop students as independent and creative problem-

solvers, as individuals and team members. They must identify needs, wants and opportunities

and respond to them by developing a range of design ideas and making appropriate products.

The specification combines practical skills with

an understanding of aesthetics, social, moral

and environmental issues, function and

industrial practice.

Students reflect on and

evaluate relevant present and past design and

technology, its uses and

effects, in addition to looking at specialist knowledge of properties.

In addition we will be looking at broadening students knowledge through linking core subject

knowledge such as maths and science into different applications of Design and Technology.

Students that choose to study Product Design must understand the written and academic

requirements of the subject. This is not a 100% practical marked course. The non-exam

assessment is an individual project that requires a substantial commitment to independent



In addition to generic School equipment such as writing pens a pencil sharpener and rubber,

students must also have a fine line black pen, a set square and a set of colouring pencils. Students

could also add graphics rendering pens such as Promarkers to their pencil case if desired.


Design trip in Year 10 destination TBC. Cost approximately £25 per person

Section C – Designing and making

principles (50 marks)

A mixture of short answer and extended

response questions including a 12 mark design
