REQUIREMENTS -

GCSE LEVEL

Grade 7 in German

or Grade 6 in consultation with Subject Leader

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students study technological and social change, looking at the

multicultural nature of German speaking society. They study

highlightsof German-speakingartisticculture, includingart and

architecture, and learn how Germany’s political landscape was

formed. Students explore the influenceof thepast onpresent-day

German-speaking communities. Throughout their studies, they

learn the language in the context of German-speaking countries

and the issues and influenceswhich have shaped them. Students

study texts and film and will have the opportunity to carry out

independent research on an area of their choice. Assessment

tasks will be varied and cover listening, speaking, reading and

writing skills.

Topics covered:

• The changing state of the family • The digital world

• Youth culture • Immigration • Integration • Racism

• Festivals and Traditions • Art and Architecture • Cultural

life in Berlin, past and present • Germany and the European

Union • Politics and Youth • German re-unification and its

consequences

In addition A Level students study either two texts or one

text and one film from a given list.

PROGRESSION

Food and Drink, Law, Sales and Marketing, Transport, Tourism

and Leisure, Public Sector, International Organisations; including

the UN and the EU institutions.

Students are encouraged to travel abroad at least once during

their course and take advantage of the opportunities offered to

participate in a work experience programme in Germany. The

cost of such trips is approximately £500.
