PHYSICAL EDUCATION

REQUIREMENTS -

GCSE LEVEL

Grade 6 in PE or if not studied at GCSE Level

Science Grade 6

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The focus of the course is on performance in physical activity

and through academic study, you will gain the knowledge

to improve yours and others’ performance or coaching

through application of the theory.

You will gain an understanding of the impact sport has on

your everyday life and you will learn the reasons why we do

things, and why some people outperform others - mentally

and physically. Ethical considerations behind the use of drugs

and also the influence that modern technology is having on

physical activity and sport is examined. Physical activity is

integral to a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle and has an

impact on many other components.

The OCR course will give candidates the opportunity to develop

a wide-ranging set of key skills, including;

• Communication using appropriate language

• Dealing with pressure

• Split second decision making

• Interpreting and analysing data

• Analysing & evaluating to improve sports performance

• Development of strong literacy and numeracy skills

It is essential to the course that students are playing sport

both inside and outside of school. The practical element of the

course is worth 30% and is assessed over one activity.

PROGRESSION

Higher education institutions and employers have consistently

flagged the need for students to develop a range of transferable

skills to enable them to confidently respond to the demands of

undergraduate study and the world of work.

You will also develop leadership techniques to support you in

any chosen career. The study of PEwill develop your confidence

and by engaging in coaching younger students you can expect

to see a development in your communication skills. Potential

degrees include Sports Science, Teaching, Sport Teacher/

Coach and Leisure Management.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

No specific additional costs, but students must be participating

in sport and physical activity inside and outside of school.

Students must be able to perform in at least one sport from

the OCR approved list to a good standard as this ability makes

up 35% of the final grade.
