Pelican Wire ESOP
After 40 years as a family owned business,
Pelican Wire Company Inc has formed an
Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
The initiative was one of the last actions
of the company’s founder, Larry Bill,
who passed away in April 2008 after an
extended illness. “It was always Larry’s
dream to give the company back to the
employees that had made it successful,”
said Theresa Bill, Larry’s widow and life
long business partner.
Theodore (Ted) Bill, company president,
explained,“The company benefits directly
with significant tax breaks, but the big
winner in all of this is the employee.
They actually earn shares in the company,
at no cost, which are redeemable for
cash on retirement.”
According to a 2000 Rutgers study, sales
in ESOP companies were 2.3% greater
than similar non-ESOP companies, while
aWashington State study in 1998 showed
that employees in ESOP companies
have 2.5 times the retirement assets as
employees in non-ESOP companies.
