Wire & Cable ASIA – November/December 2014

Technology

news

CABLES must meet ever more

demanding

tasks.

As

a

consequence, cable design is

continually becoming more and

more complex. In order to comply

with these requirements, cable

manufacturers need up-to-date

equipment

which

operates

economically and can be used to

produce reliably and efficiently all

types of data and special cables.

The

DSI

type

double-twist

stranding machines developed by

Niehoff

meet

all

these

requirements.

The DSI stranding concept is

based on the successful design of

Niehoff’s D series double-twist

bunching

machines,

which

represents a long-established

experience in the design of wire

bunching and cable stranding

machines dating back to the late

1960s.

After the newly developed series D

bunching machine had been met with

great acclaim by the market on its

introduction in 1997, the first Niehoff

stranding machine followed in the early

2000s, based on this series of

machines. The already field proven

double-twist stranding machines DSI

631 and DSI 1001 are designed to

manufacture insulated conductors into

pairs or quads or to strand conductor

pairs into special cables with or

without foils.

Compared to conventional cable

stranding

machines,

energy

consumption and noise emissions of

the DSI machines are significantly

reduced due to their one-bow design

and a state-of-the-art energy saving

drive

technology.

A

further

characteristic is the contactless

machine data transfer system which

minimises

maintenance

and

operational and material costs. The

new DSI type machines are equipped

with the newly designed and

standardised NMI (Niehoff Machine

Interface) touch-screen display with

colour user interface and simplified

navigation structure.

The DSI machines are built for a wide

conductor cross section range and a

maximum strand diameter of 8.5mm or

15mm, respectively. The lay length can

be freely adjusted over a wide

range within a very narrow

tolerance band. A DSI stranding

machine can be combined with a

whole range of units and pay-offs

thanks to its modular design. One

of the special features is the

double-twist backtwist pay-off,

which enables up to three foils to

be applied to a cable under

controlled foil tension in inline

operation. With the ‘triple twist’

function, the production speed can

be substantially increased even

further.

Because of the modular concept,

DSI stranding lines can be

adapted to the requirements of

each user and flexibly modified to

manufacturing scheduling and

planning and to changing cable

designs and specifications. If a

line is not fully utilised with the

stranding of data cables, it can be

used to manufacture other cables. It is

also possible to realise new

manufacturing processes and to test

the production of new products.

Another advantage for users of these

and other Niehoff systems is that the

company supports customers with

comprehensive process knowledge, a

professional after sales services and

expedient customer service. The users

of Niehoff technology therefore have

the tools at hand to benefit from further

development in the cable sector.

Sicme Italia Impianti, a manufacturer of enamelled wire

machines, has introduced its latest high-technology wire

enamelling machine, the Super EG.

This machine can change the way enamelled wire is

produced and is the result of six years of hard work,

research and development.

The prototype of this plant was on display a week after wire

2014 and during the demonstration the machine was

running for aluminium wire diameter of 0.28mm at speed of

720m/minute producing excellent quality magnet wire with

tan-delta 197.0/ 251.7 C. This would make the Super EG

one of the fastest machines with 40 per cent more

production capability.

This super high speed and low cost production is possible

by a combination of electrical energy for motive and any

combustible gas like methane, propane, LPG, butane, etc,

for thermal energy.

Sicme Italia Impianti has already patented this technology

and is in the process of getting safety certificates from

governments of various countries.
