Fall 2018
If You Go
Air Canada, Sunwing, WestJet
and Air Transat fly to Puerto
Vallarta, which is the best place
to access Riviera Nayarit. The
airport is about 160 kilometres
south of San Blas. Puerto
Vallarta makes a good starting
point and abounds with hotel
options. The best time to
see the birds in their most
abundance is from October
through April. Bring a good
pair of binoculars!
evolved into an important draw for
tourism, and this ‘avian Arcadia’ in
the Riviera Nayarit has become an
important birding destination for
enthusiasts from all over the world.
Because avi-tourism has become
an important draw here, there are
several different birding excursions
available.
In addition to tours through La
Tovara, there are boat trips to
Isla Isabel nature preserve to
see brown- and blue-footed
boobies and frigate birds, with
the chance of whale sightings and
maybe some ocean fishing on
the way. The coffee plantations
and forested hills along the Sierra
Madres surrounding San Blas are
also prime bird watching spots.
Dedicated birders hope to see the
black-throated magpie-jay or the
elegant quail, endemic to the area.
After a long day of chasing birds,
there’s the quiet pleasure of the
miles-long beach at San Blas,
Playa Matanchen, where you
can order freshly grilled fish and
a chilled margarita and watch
the sun set over the Pacific.
Overlooking San Blas are the
ruins of Our Lady of the Rosary,
founded around 1769, and the old
fort left over from colonial days.
Both are worth a visit.
Along the coast of Riviera Nayarit,
you will find other small fishing
villages, such as San Francisco,
Litibu, Sayulita where the surfing
is world famous or Bucerias,
where lovers can steal a kiss in the
Callejon del Beso (Kiss Alley).
The Gold Coast of Nayarit is home
to some of the world’s top resorts.
In the celebrity-frequented area
of Punta Mita, the St. Regis is
a standout, offering exquisite
cuisine, and all the pleasures of
a fine resort. Fairmont’s Costa
Canuva will open in late 2018 also
along this part of the coast.
Birders can take excursions from
Punta de Mita to Isla Marietas,
another important bird sanctuary
where blue-footed boobies
abound. While there, you can
visit the famous Hidden Beach,
accessible only by swimming
through a watery cavern, but well
worth the effort.
Riviera Nayarit is rich in culture,
scenery and cuisine, but its birding
experiences are unique and
surprisingly compelling. It takes
birdwatching from nerdy to cool.
