Georgian homes , from the era 1740-1830, are characteristically robust yet elegant buildings that feature clean and symmetrical lines, pale woodwork and spacious interiors, and are typically terraced. The kitchen is large and open, and usually the fireplace is the central feature of the room. Victorian homes came into style between 1837-1901. They are generally more modest than Georgian homes, but soon developed features that define them from previous terraced styles. Bay windows, decorative porches, and shaped barge boards inside the roof were small alterations that meant that the homes catered for not only the rich, but also the new “middling classes” as well as the poor. Victorian homes are typically small and terraced. Edwardian homes emerged from 1901-1910 when the new middle classes desired homes with a little more space and began to move to the suburbs, usually around train lines, and with no longer a need for a servant’s quarters. The home was becoming a more informal place, and homeowners were beginning to look for building quality in a home, rather than searching out of necessity. Most Mews houses were originally built throughout the 17th to 19th centuries as stables with accommodation above for servants. Today, they are restored into modern houses, often with a garage, serving as homes on quiet streets or alleys away from main roads. Mews houses are highly desirable properties as they are usually pretty and modern, in central locations nearby to all the necessities, all the while tucked away in a small and charming community.
