£12 izs. od. was all that was payable. It was argued by the lessor's solicitors that the word " stamped " in clause 2 (&) did not cover adjudication which was instead covered by the words " or incidental thereto ". The lessee's solicitors contended that the obligation to stamp and register could not be carried out unless the lease was first adjudicated and that the lease, being one of many granted by the lessor, they must have known that adjudication was required and a specified fee should have been included in the contract if it was intended to claim one. The Council on a report from a committee decided that the lessor's solicitors were not entitled to the extra fee of £4 45. od. claimed in respect of the adjudication of the deed as it is included in the agreed fee of £12 125. od. lessor's costs to be paid by the lessee under clause 2 (b) of the contract. Recovery of a gaming debt. A member was instructed by a client to recover a gaming debt due to him by a bookmaker and advised that no action lay. The Society has advised members in the past that the institution or threat of such proceedings is unprofessional. Member referred to the statement to that effect in the Society's GAZETTE for February, 1958, and enquired if there would be any objection to his writing on the instructions of his client to the bookmaker concerned stating that he had received instructions to oppose the renewal of the bookmaker's licence failing payment of his client's claim. The Council on a report from a committee stated that there could be no objection to member writing to the bookmaker on the client's instructions stating simply that he had received instructions to oppose the renewal of his licence.
