PHILIPS have generously agreed to present a Pocket M e mo " D i r e c t o r " 8 9 6 and a Desk T r ans c r i p t i on Ma c h i ne from their new VIS range for the first correct (or nearest) forecast of scores opened of the Millennium Match between Ireland and England a t Lansdowne Road on the 23rd April. VIS (Visual Index System) i sa key feature of the new Philips' Memo " D i r e c t o r" 896. Already available on the desk-top machines and now extended to the portable equipment as well.

The key VIS system component is a magnetic strip-based on technology developed for NASA — that visually indicates recording time, the beginnings of new messages, and if there are any special remarks or corrections. The VIS strip also shows how much of the mini-cassette has been used and the length of each message. After the cassette has been transcribed, the VIS strip information can be easily erased to enable new information to be recorded. This is how i tworks: as soon as you begin to speak, a horizontal line appears automatically on the green strip. The beginning and end of each text can be indicated by a vertical line appearing above this horizontal line; remarks and corrections can be marked as such during dictation by simply pressing the appropriate button. These are then displayed as a vertical line below the horizontal line. So now a secretary can see at a glance the basic story behind each cassette — i fi thas been used, how long each segment and total recording are, whether to listen for special remarks, and how many messages are carried. The originator can also now benefit from seeing the same information, from the greater efficiency his or her secretary will enjoy, and from improved communications, thanks to VIS. With VIS, the communicator can quickly scan through the cassette to the beginnings of messages, or to special instructions, thus getting swiftly to the point. VIS i s unique to the Philips dictation line.
