Meeting spec is the standard that says, “good enough.” And that makes spec prices seem good for your bottom line. But your bottom line does not stop at the price of purchase. To us, good enough doesn’t build loyalty, it fulfills short-sighted cost savings. It doesn’t build trust, it completes a transaction-based relationship. We support mission-critical infrastructures that must withstand the harshest environments. We don’t take that lightly, and we know you don’t either. or those in marketing and advertising, there are few greater moments in television than the final episode of AMC’s Mad Men. Don Draper leaves our lives in

his wisdom by subscribing to Tips & News during his near 30 year tenure as editor. Dick is, undoubtedly, one of the greats, one of the last mad men. Dick held a number of roles, spending most of his time with Hubbell managing the advertising department. Dick oversaw Tips & News magazine, transitioned and managed advertising for a number of acquired brands and 100+ shows each year. He took it all in stride. After an illustrious career, Dick is retiring in May 2018, but not before one last hoorah — IEEE in Denver, Colorado.

one final moment of magic — the classic “Real Thing” Coca-Cola commercial, arguably one of the most iconic commercials of all time. Yet, every once in a while, there’s an individual that has many of those moments. HPS has known such greatness for 46 years through Dick Erdel, our Tradeshow Manager. Many of you know Dick by seeing him for years at major industry shows. Others have never met him but have experienced

I treasure all the advice (and one-liners) I’ve received from Dick. Crystal, it’s like this…When that request comes in, we storm the beaches. And he did. Crystal Mistretta Director, HPS Marketing and Communication

You don’t need a gimmick. When you’re good all you need is authenticity. Dick Erdel

DICK SPARED A FEW MOMENTS DURING HIS TIME ON THE ROAD TO SHARE HIS 45 YEAR JOURNEY.

So, if you started as an Advertising Assistant, how did you get started doing tradeshows? After I became Advertising Assistant, I went into sales of consumer products. I was also Product Manager of anchors for a number of years. And then, due to a need in the department, I transferred back into advertising. Trade shows have gotten bigger for HPS over the years, but we went to trade shows even before I ever started with the company. CHANCE was always aggressive in trade shows and now HPS is also. How many locations do you think you’ve traveled to over the years? Oh my goodness — many, many, many. I think I’ve been in every state, multiple times, except for maybe 5 or 6. What is your favorite thing about organizing the shows? I like making sure that we pull them off successfully. I’ve seen it all — a company’s booth doesn’t show up, or it’s put in backwards. We have never had what I would call a “trade show catastrophe”. I always looked out for the major things. I wanted to pull off the major events. What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you while on the road? I won’t answer that one.

You started with A.B Chance/HPS in your early 20s. Was it your first job? No, I was actually a radio announcer at 18 years old, and I did it all the way through college — where I attended Missouri University. What did you do after college? I was drafted in 1969 and served in the army until 1971. I served as a Public Information Specialist, where my background in radio announcing came in handy. I did a little radio, film and wrote for Stars and Stripes in Europe. I also worked Armored Centinal, which was public speaking for the army. Assigned with the Royal Highland in England, most of my service was Fort Hood, TX. When did you start working at AB Chance/HPS and what was your first title? I got married in 1972 after discharging from the service and went to Business School on the GI bill. I started with what was then A.B. Chance in May, 1973 as an Advertising Assistant.

Dickmanaged the fast pace of the advertisingwork with grace and humor, storming the beaches to arrive at moments of magic, moments like scoring the billboard in Chicago for IEEE 1994 and countless “Best Booth” Awards.

And having the guts to use white carpet at all of our tradeshows.

WE COULDN’T BE PROUDER OF DICK’S CAREER AT HPS AND WISH HIM AND HIS FAMILY ALL THE BEST IN RETIREMENT.

Hubbell offers one of the most extensive bushing product portfolios while providing customers with world-class service

NATURAL EVOLUTION Hubbell Power Systems focuses on traditional and modern bushing technologies One Hubbell

within Hubbell resulting in the most comprehensive combination of bushing technologies, solutions, and technical knowledge, all with a combined 80 years of bushing design and manufacturing experience. PCORE Electric Company was formerly known as the Lapp Insulator Company, Bushing Division until 2004, when it was transformed into PCORE Electric. The business was acquired in 2007 to further strengthen Hubbell’s position in the substation market. To complete the bushing products portfolio with a focus on newer bushing technologies, Hubbell subsequently acquired Electro Composites in 2008, adding

composite bushing technology to the product offering. Bushing technologies There are three bushing technologies available to both Original Equipment Manufacturers and Electric Utilities: POC®, PRC® and SDC™, as shown in Fig.1. Two of the technologies have been around for some time and are proven industry champion technologies, including the POC® (Paper-Oil-Capacitor) and PRC® (Paper-Resin-Capacitor) types designed and manufactured by PCORE Electric, that combine traditionally used materials with electrical grade porcelain insulators,

What happens when two of the industry’s leading North American capacitance graded bushing manufacturers are joined into one under the Hubbell Power Systems brand? The resulting Hubbell Power Systems Bushing Business Unit offers one of the most extensive bushing product portfolios while providing customers with world-class service all within a One Hubbell directive.

What began as two separate independently owned bushing

businesses, PCORE Electric Company and Electro Composites were united

18 | HUBBELL POWER SYSTEMS

Hubbell bushings are available in three technologies: Paper-Oil-Capacitor, Paper-Resin-Capacitor and Solid- Dielectric-Capacitor

developed to provide safer, faster and more cost-effective substation maintenance and testing practices. Most recently, PCORE enhanced the PRC® bushing product line. PCORE introduced an oil-free option for electric utilities that appreciate the proven longterm performance of PRC®s which were first introduced in the 1960s combined with the benefits of an oil-free bushing technology, Fig. 4. Some of the great features of the bushings produced by PCORE Electric and Electro Composites are: • All bushings are IEEE 693 seismically certified • Most designs are suitable for TBI –Transformer/Breaker Interchangeability • Users have the choice between oil-filled or oil-free bushing technologies for 15 kV through 138 kV voltage classes • Availability of high-creep and high altitude bushings as a standard offering • All bushings are fabricated in ISO- 9001 (2008) certified factories • Bushing designs are available for IEEE C57.19.00/01, CSA C88.1 and IEC 60137 standards • Standard configurations and “Engineered to Order”replacement bushing options are available for critical applications

which are well known and widely accepted by the electrical industry. The third more recent technology, known as the SDC™ (Solid-Dielectric-Capacitor) type technology fabricated by Electro Composites, is made of cast electrical grade epoxy resin, which provides different benefits and range of use. All three technologies are capacitance graded; meaning that the internal electrical stress within the insulating core is controlled or graded using series capacitors imbedded within the insulation. The bushing products offered by Hubbell are summarized in Table 1. The range of applications for each of the three bushing types offered by Hubbell is summarized in Fig. 2. Moving Forward In more recent years, the Bushing Business Unit has launched new products based on customer feedback and solutions needed for the industry. Electro Composite’s generator and generator-step-up transformer type bushings for power generation applications provide reliable high-current bushings for new and aging in-service generators and large power transformers, Figure 3. Both businesses provide bushings certified to the IEEE-693 seismic standard to address utilities’ concerns for earthquakes and other major natural disasters. PCORE is the only bushing manufacturer in the world to offer a 500 kV oil-filled, porcelain bushing to meet the high-performance level of this standard. Convenience type products such as Quick- Link type bushings and PCORE Seismically Enhanced Test (SET) Terminals have been

SDC® - SDCTM - SOLID- DIELECTRIC-CAPACITOR • Solid cast epoxy composite bushing technology with integral epoxy sheds and condenser core, providing all the advantages of oil-free technology • Modern bushing technology with 20 years proven field service • Transformer-Breaker Interchangeable (TBI) bushing combined with high performance seismic capabilities • Custom designs to meet difficult dimensional requirements • Available per IEEE C57.19.01, CSA C88.1, IEC 60137 abd DUN 48124 bushing standards

PRC® - PAPER-RESIN-CAPACITOR • Resin-impregnated paper wound core with external porcelain insulator. • Available in both oil-filled and oil-free designs. • Transformer-Breaker Interchangeable (TBI) bushing combined with high performance seismic capabilities • Available per IEEE C57.19.01 andCSA C88.1 bushing standards

Selection process When it comes to selecting a bushing for a transformer or similar equipment, there are many factors and considerations involved in the choice of the type of bushing to use, and within the selection process, the type of bushing to use is not always obvious. Parameters such as voltage, current, strike distance, creep distance and CT pocket length are the usual selection criteria; however, consideration

Apart from usual selection criteria, overloading conditions, environment, seismic requirements, angle of installation, etc. play a determining role in selecting the bushing

Not all bushings are equal The most common types of bushing used on power transformers are capacitance graded bushings such as the PCORE Electric and Electro Composites PRC®, POC® and SDC™ technologies. Bulk type or solid type bushings can also be used in instances. A bulk type or solid type bushing is the most basic type of bushing manufactured and is defined by the IEEEE C57.19.00 as: “A non-capacitance graded bushing in which the major insulation is provided by a ceramic or analogous material placed around the energized conductor”. This type of bushing is usually limited to 34.5 kV. Due to no capacitance grading, partial discharge can be an issue with these designs. To withstand higher voltages, the bushing must be physically larger which then causes a challenge in meeting the maximum diameters specified in the IEEE standard. When considerations are being made for high voltage bushings, a capacitance graded bushing is the current industry’s preferred bushing design. Capacitance graded bushings are defined by the IEEE as “A bushing in which metallic or nonmetallic conducting layers are

arranged within the insulating material for the purpose of controlling the distribution of the electric field of the bushing, both axially and radially”. There are now many different types of insulating materials used to make capacitance graded bushings available on the market. How may we serve you? PCORE Electric and Electro Composites are one of the leaders when it comes to not only providing a diverse, high quality, evolving bushing offering but also has the ability to offer the technical support to its customers to help select the correct product for the application. It is this ability that PCORE Electric and Electro Composites’ customers have come to expect.
