I nfluenced by his former educators, W. Dean Eastman has taught government, history and economics in Massachusetts since 1970. To excel in his career, he earned a Bachelor of Science in social science education from Drake University in 1970, a Master of Science in education and a certificate of advanced graduate study in administration studies from Springfield College in 1976, and a master’s degree in liberal arts from Harvard University in 2000. He began his career in 1970 as a track and field coach at Springfield College and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, remaining as such for 11 years. During his tenure, he coached eight Division II NCAA track and field All-Americans and published a number of articles in various coaching journals. social science at Beverly High School, a position he continues to hold. Mr. Eastman is the founder of the W. Dean Eastman Charitable Foundation and sponsor of the W. Dean Eastman New England Collection at the Drake University Library. He contributed to the Nathan Dane biography in the Yale Biographical Dictionary of American Law, published in 2009, hosted a 10-part series on immigration for Massachusetts Educational TV in 1992, and contributed articles to professional journals and magazines in the field. In 1991, Mr. Eastman was featured on the “Today” show for his work with homeless students and was introduced on “The Tonight Show” by Jay Leno. In 1992, he hosted a 10-part series on immigration for Massachusetts Educational Television. He was featured in a PBS three-part series called “Only A Teacher: A History of Teaching in America,” and appeared on ABC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” twice. Mr. Eastman has been featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in American Education, in addition to receiving the Preserve America Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year award in 2004, the Prince Saunders Award in 2005, the Drake Alumni Achievement Award in 1991, the American Teacher Award in 1991, and the Outstanding Teacher Award from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in 1989.
