M edical educator Wayne H. Finley has been imparting his knowledge to his students since 1949. As a science teacher, Dr. Finley has inspired students to seek out answers to scientific questions. He obtained a Bachelor of Science from Jacksonville State University and a Master of Arts, a Master of Science, a Ph.D., and a medical degree from the University of Alabama with GI Bill support, and he finished postgraduate work at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. After teaching science to high school students between two tours in the United States Army, he received a Ph.D. and medical degree and then was an intern for the University of Alabama Hospitals and Clinics for a year before joining the faculty of the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1962. He continued in research, teaching and service in medical genetics as a professor with several secondary appointments. Successes in the medical genetics program

at the University of Alabama at Birminghamwere shared with his wife, Sara C. Finely, MD, as they developed the programwith institutional and grant support. He has served in prestigious positions as director of the medical genetics graduate program at the University of Alabama Birmingham and director of the American Board of Medical Genetics approved training program. He was the chairman of the Carey Phillips Travel Fellowship for medical students, and contributed articles and abstracts on human malformations and clinical cytogenetics to professional journals. He has also received many professional and community service awards for his contributions, including the Outstanding Educators of America Award; the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award from the University of Alabama Medical Center; a President’s Medal from the University of Alabama at Birmingham; a Graduate Student Fellowship for medical students studying genetics in the name of Wayne House Finley Ph.D., MD; the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Birmingham Business Journal; and being named to the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame in 2001. While Dr. Finley is retired, he remains active through his affiliations and memberships with many medical and philanthropic organizations.
