W ith a background in social anthropology, has studied the ways in which people live in different social and cultural settings. Since 1964 and through the present, Dr. Gamst has imparted his knowledge of societies and the various ways in which they engage and practice religions to postsecondary students. He began working at Rice University, where he taught for nine years and was an instructor of anthropology. He continued to prosper at the institution, serving as an assistant professor from 1967 to 1971 and as an associate professor from 1971 to 1975. After leaving the university, he made a home for himself at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. department of anthropology, and associate provost for graduate studies. With his hard work and dedication to the institution and his students, he earned the title of professor emeritus in 2001. Outside of the classroom, Dr. Gamst has served as a consultant in social relations, human factors and operations to the railroad industry since 1970, acting director of Houston’s Interuniversity African studies program, and an adjunct professor of anthropology at the University of Wyoming since 2010. His expertise in social anthropology has aided him in writing and editing several books, as well as contributing articles and reviews to professional publications. Dr. Gamst continues to remain abreast of the field as a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Anthropological Association, the Society of Applied Anthropology, and a member of many organizations in his field. His successful career is backed by an Associate of Arts from Pasadena City College, a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkley.
