C ol. Dr. Walter A. Hairston is a retired school system administrator. Col. Hairston’s military career began in 1948, as he received his basic training at Fort Dixon, N.J. In 1950 he was sent to a career station near the demilitarized zone in North Korea with the 89 th Tank Batallion. After returning to Fort Meade, Md., he became chief evaluator for the first army station there while in that position and various other positions, such as chief evaluator, director of the command and general staff college (reserve) located in Baltimore, Md. Col. Hairston served in these positions for two years. In 1984 he became a member of the functional area assessment team for the U.S. Army Transportation Corp Station at Fort Eustis, Va. Col. Hairston’s work in the military did not prevent him from receiving a Bachelor of Science from Morgan State University, graduating with honors in 1959, and graduating with a Master of Education from Loyola College thereafter. He began his employment with the U.S. Postal Service while earning both degrees. While working at the post office at

nights, Col. Hairston attained the position of general foreman of mails. He has utilized his knowledge and expertise to author a book titled “No Excuses.” Soon after retiring from a three-track career with a total of 123 years of retirement and total disabilities, Col. Hairston received a doctorate from Morgan State University in 2014. He is married to Jeannette O. Hairston, a retired school teacher.
